I really enjoyed working on black paper, but since I don't have any black watercolor paper, the paint tends to pool on it and it's hard to control my layers. So I tried out making my own #tonedpaper by putting down a mid tone wash of sumi-e ink onto my mixed media sketchbook. Then I used white #gouache to layer in the highlights and black #inkwashes for the shadows. I haven't worked on toned paper since university, so this was a fun #draweveryday2020 #portraitpaintingstudy https://www.instagram.com/p/B9XSswvgCAK/?igshid=hwlhucrxcwdb
Playing around with more of the Rembrandt watercolor and brush I got in this month's @artsnacks box, this time using it together with my gouache for this #draweveryday2020 #portraitpaintingstudy https://www.instagram.com/p/B9P7TQmggt5/?igshid=17p4kfhvq797p
Another #gouache #portraitpaintingstudy for #draweveryday2020 I find painting a portrait of someone with soft features to be deceptively challenging, so I really wanted to focus on those subtle transitions of value. I painted the hair second to last, and the contrast of it versus the facial shading pulled the whole study together https://www.instagram.com/p/B8zfYXSlEmj/?igshid=1w4odjl5vn05k
I really liked how the earlier #portraitpaintingstudy turned out, that I decided to do another one today. I used white #gouache on the glasses since I thought it would be easier than trying to reserve the paper on such a small detail https://www.instagram.com/p/B8x2CiXl-kI/?igshid=od7yf5k887zc
I mixed up a really great desaturated purple yesterday for a work project, that I wanted to use it for today's #draweveryday2020 which is a #gouache #portraitpaintingstudy I used the paint transparency to build up layers, since I often have a habit of going too dark too quickly. The paints I used for this mix are quinacradone violet (spectrum) from #mgraham phthalo blue from #winsorandnewton and a smidge of hansa yellow also from M. Graham https://www.instagram.com/p/B8wmquwFD3x/?igshid=hweplv6p40v4
