THE OCEAN

Growing up in the ocean as a baby hooded seal, it was enjoyable to be surrounded by family without a care in the world.

Being with her community was all she ever knew and wanted, they were her life and her home.

She had a knack for swimming out further than she maybe should have and while she was out on her own one day was when she ended up losing track of her pack.

She wasn’t sure what happened, if maybe she took a wrong turn and got lost, if they just left without her or something worse.

She tirelessly searched for them, feeling desperate, wanting to learn the truth of what happened.

The longer it took, the more frightened she got and after an immeasurable amount of time she decided to try searching in unknown waters.

During her search in an unfamiliar ocean, she ended up in an altercation with a bigger and more threatening sea creature looking for a snack.

She only barely managed to make it through alive and had it not been for Scylla she would not be here right now.

ON LAND

It was extremely disorienting to end up on land in her new body, suddenly being advised of what happened to her by Scylla.

She was alone, she had been attacked and Scylla was the one who saved her and gave her this new life as a gift.

Amara didn’t think of it as a gift, being stranded somewhere she was not accustomed to, not being able to go back into the water and continue her search for her family.

She felt trapped despite being made to feel as though this was a good thing for her as well as the others who were here on this island with them.

Scylla trained them about human customs and how to present without seeming suspicious. Amara took to the training as best as she could, knowing that if she could show promise she could at least get away from Scylla and figure out a course of action for her life.

Amara doesn’t want to be on land but she knows she can’t return back home, she’s angry but pushes that feeling down to pretend as though everything is ok.

With her agency stripped away from her, the things she had hoped to achieve were now meaningless. This was where she had to be now and she had to try and make the most of it.

HEADCANONS

Amara did not choose the name that she is using, this was given to her by Scylla who seemed to have a better grasp on human naming conventions.

If anyone asks, she tells people that she lived up in Northern Canada before coming to Port Vale.

She uses her cluelessness of the human world to her advantage, claiming to be from a sheltered family finally trying to make it on her own while also making sure she comes across as ditzy.

She’s conflicted about being up on land but knows there is nothing she can do about getting back to her home so making the most of it is her only option.

Once she discovered that the hooded seal was an endangered species, not only did she fear the worst for her family but has been doing research to help spread awareness for not only them but other endangered animals.

Amara chose to work at the thrift shop because she is so fascinated with the things people choose to donate and just give away.

She enjoys singing and humming while she works, noticing how nice it sounded thanks to Scylla’s gift.

She hasn’t completely figured out what her human persona is and she usually likes interacting with others to see how they act, trying to mimic and follow their quirks/mannerisms to try them out for herself.

THE OCEAN

Born one half of a set Lucia should have been destined to share her life with someone who understood her more than anyone else. Instead she has never met her sister and ruling became the only thing she held close to her heart. A hollow replacement for a relationship that could have changed her entire course of life. She grew into a powerful ruler and fierce protector of what was hers in the northern waters. She was exactly what the goddess wanted of the mermaid princesses when she made them and warned them of danger. Different from the other rulers of the seven oceans. A thing she should have been proud of really but instead it left her feeling a longing for something more. A bitterness that hardened her against not only her foes but life and living in general. Her time in the ocean is nothing but endless cold days of ruling and responsibility. A deep lonely place that she both loves and hates with all of her heart.

ON LAND

The prospect of being on land was both intriguing and horrifying to Lucia. She was a ruler of her waters and people and that was important to her. The mere idea of leaving that behind scared her more than whatever was plaguing Assyria. Death was not a source of worry for her. Instead the idea of having the only thing she’d ever cared for ripped away was what made her cold blood turn to pure ice. She’d always longed for something more than the life she was given but the chance to have it was now real and it was a true challenge. Being on land has made her feel even more lost than she ever has before. Lucia is holding herself back on enjoying the change she has finally been given. The chance to be someone else is so tempting but she’s falling back on old habits. Without being a ruler she doesn’t believe anyone would respect her and so she wants to climb her way back to some semblance of power here in Port Vale.

PERSONALITY

On the surface Lucia is often seen as cold and menacing to those around her. She has a gaze that causes many around her to cower or avert their eyes. She is haughty and confident in who she is and holds herself with a grace and regality to match that. Her strength is what has gotten her as far as she is. Without the strength of character she may not have thrived as a ruler and warrior for her people. She’s careful and calculating when the circumstances call for it. Lucia is also highly intelligent as she’s spent much of her life alone and focused her energy on learning everything she could to maintain her upper hand on the things around her. She values being as independent as she is despite a deep loneliness in her soul that she keeps hidden away from everyone. Underneath the armor of strength and ice she uses to protect herself Lucia is a truly caring ruler. She wants the best for everyone around her often at the expense of her own happiness. Her emotions have always been a hard thing to approach as she’s chosen to ignore the ones that she deemed weak or useless. Lucia is an intensely complicated person at her core but most people don’t bother to see past what they think is her cruel exterior. Restrained to the point of stunting her own emotional development Lucia is still a work in progress with so much more to offer if others would just take a chance on her.

She wears a heart of the ocean sapphire pendent at all times and has had it for as long as she can remember. It’s the closest she has ever been to having her sister near. She never takes it off.

Welcome to Port Vale, Weldon...

Your kind is nearly gone from the world, and you know this all too well. with origins unknown, even by you, the burden of protecting everyone weighs heavy on your heart. you feel too much, know too much, and see all. this war is something sinister, and you wonder if it’s the final blow to your species. will you be enough to save them, or will you fade from history with the rest?

-The Basics

   - Being the eldest living Hippocampus means protecting your brothers. Weldon is very overprotective of his family and will do anything to keep them safe. With the darkness brewing in the ocean, he comes to Port Vale to make sure he is doing his job.

   - He spent most of his time in tropical and sub-tropical waters. He spent a lot of time in Central and South America during the 1950s and 1960s, even getting as far as Havana, Cuba (Goddess only knows how he pulled that off).

   - Weldon had a job on land once many years ago, before the age of social security numbers and photo IDs, but currently he is unemployed and looking for the right job so that he can keep watchful eyes on his little brothers and the strange folk in Port Vale, he trusts very few.

   - The freshly ended war and loss of Hippocampi haunts Weldon. He felt the darkness brewing then, but it’s worse now. The world isn’t the same now as it was 60 years ago, both on land and in the sea, and neither is Weldon. The events that have taken course over the past 375 years have made him cynical.

   - Overall, Weldon is snarky cynic that doesn’t put stock into rumors and theories, he is interested in the truth and nothing but. He is determined to find the truth and to put an end to the mysterious disappearances, even if he must do it alone. Despite the angst and rage that Weldon has, he comes off as light-hearted and care-free. He knows he has to stay strong for his brothers and hide the truth from any prying humans.

- WANTED CONNECTIONS

   -Current fling: As a man on a mission, Weldon “can’t afford to be tied down to a relationship” (his words, not mine). So it would be interesting if he entered a flirtationship with a siren, mermaid, selkie, or human. Perhaps he signed up for more than he bargained for and begins to really care for this person. Maybe things just blow up and he knows he has to prioritize his brothers and the situation in the ocean. I feel like it would be really fun to explore a bit of heart in the otherwise-preoccupied Weldon.

   -Human friend(s): He hasn’t spent much time on land over the past 50 years. For the 300 years that the war was happening, he spent a lot of time on land, traveling around to escape everything, so it would be fun to explore human friendships and watch him fumble with the current state of social interaction as compared to the 1960s. He would have absolutely no idea what a cell-phone is, along with any other groundbreaking inventions in the past 50 or so years. Maybe someone can show him how to use these things.

   - Debauchery pal: Weldon is pretty corrupted as far as morals, and he needs someone to get into trouble with. Any race could be applicable. My idea of trouble mainly includes drinking, smoking, and maybe the occasional barroom brawl (Idk though, he has been in plenty of those). 

   - Honorary sibling: This person would be the siren, selkie, or mermaid that Weldon kind of adopts, he prioritizes this person as he would his brothers. This would be a rare kind of connection for Weldon, as he remained uninvolved during the course of the war and didn’t pick sides or have a preference. I feel like this connection would be the one person he could open up to since he wants to remain a strong and less haunted presence around his brothers. This connection would hopefully grow to understand the position Weldon is in.

once, you thought that thrive meant only to survive. now you are tasting life like you’ve never known it, and every breath is a gift. you will never forget this, and your penchant for racing the waves had evolved with you. no longer locked to the sea, you take to two feet with boundless ambition, and even if all you have to armor yourself with is a smile, you do so proudly. no longer does your fear confine you - no longer does it define you. ripped from the past and so pleased with the present; what more could a future undeserved hold for you?

the basics

he spent most of his life as a Mediterranean monk seal traveling; finally ended up somewhere near the red sea for the last few years of his life as a seal, and lived a long and full existence until scylla found him 

currently works as a bartender at The Houseboat, a little bar that was renovated from a home into a fun little establishment.

soren took his “human studies” very seriously, so he feels comfortable enough on land and tries his absolute hardest to blend in; he isn’t shy of being honest about himself with merfolk of any species, and would probably tell a human if he felt he could trust them

he’s got a massive bucket list of “human things” to do, so catch him trying to do just about anything at this point. he has a lot of “lost time” having been a seal for 29 years and now, newly transformed human-selkie-thing. if your character is a risk-taker or has any fun plans, consider throwing soren an invite! 

in general, soren is a talkative, social guy - eager to make connections and learn even more, but not afraid to speak up when he feels like he should, either. could be considered outspoken to some

wanted connections; 

his roommate; siobhan got soren an apartment in town, and i would love another selkie to share the two bedroom flat with him! 

regulars at the houseboat; does your character drink often? soren wants to establish a rapport with the regulars at the houseboat, so this could be a fun angle to explore while he tries to impress them 

temper-tantrums; soren is new to the whole emotional range thing - i think he’s a bit of a hot head when set off, and i’d love to explore this. is anyone up for some ic conflict? just piss soren off and we could have a fun lil time

TW: DRUGS - blaze it, baby; someone needs to get soren stoned for the first time so he can be a giggly cuddly little puddle of a thing 

his “charge”; scylla sent the selkies to land with instructions to watch & report back to her - any mermaid princesses or siren captains who don’t already have mentions with the selkie skeletons as being assigned to them, i’d love to explore soren not-so-subtley spying on your character. please catch him. please call him out. 

tinder match; you already know your boy downloaded tinder first thing. he plans on asking sera out on a date already, so this may not be a “first date” sorta thing, but i think the fun thrills of an awkward first-meet-up-date thing in port vale would be fun to explore!

THE OCEAN

It was never Seraphina that was meant to take over The Red Sea, she was meant to be at the side of her mentor as she took her rightful place. A second in command given her age difference from the other Siren and a trained warrior meant to protect their people. Her mentor, Indra was the one with the drive and plan that would bring them glory and a home of their own. Then in the fight for the territory Indra was taken from her right in front of her eyes. She couldn’t save her even as she found herself injured trying to do so. Instead she could only avenge her by killing the one who had taken Indra from her and then holding Indra as the life left her eyes. Her last words instructing Seraphina that the Sea was hers now.

Young but well trained Seraphina did her best to take her grief in stride while now beginning to lead her people as they mourned the dead and began to make the Red Sea their own. She had always felt different from her people but it was now more blatantly clear than ever as she lead with a luminous vibrance that brightened even the darkest of their days. She was patience and kind and fiercely dedicated to those she ruled. A seeming balance of the ferocity of her people and the rumors of who the mermaid Princesses seemed to be. Somehow that didn’t matter to her people. She was a ruler they would choose time and time again if they had to. Someone they could count on to always do what was necessary.

ON LAND

Now the necessary choice was to head for the shores and leave the water behind. A solution which made her uncomfortable and yet still curious. She didn’t know how this would protect her people but she was willing to do her best to find out how to do just that. Other Siren Captains had already taken this step and it was due to her peers that she had even considered such a thing. Her people were everything to her. They were her family and her heart. Now on land she still feels that longing to help them and protect the place that Indra gifted her but a small part of her adores the potential she sees in this new place. The ideas of what she can do and achieve are swirling through her mind as she is learning to be human.

PERSONALITY

Charming and charismatic are the forefront traits that define Seraphina. She has a presence that draws people to her and keeps them in her orbit. She’s vivacious and warm giving off an aura that just pulls in adoration wherever she goes. Some might call it fake but very few are not taken by everything that Seraphina is and her aura is backed by a heart of gold. A fierce sort of kindness has always been her way to rule despite the fact that she could kill anyone in a fraction of a second. She finds that being strong is fueled further by being empathic with those around her. Very rarely does anyone see a darker side to Seraphina. She sees no use in being cruel as a first choice but that doesn’t mean she has any trouble being so when the situation requires it. A deep dark anger and grief fuel her when she finds herself needing to use the traits she considers less valuable but still has. Manipulation and cunning are still a part of who she is when she needs it to be. Usually people don’t see the harsher side of Seraphina unless they have well and truly earned it. She is a woman of grace and elegance who values loyalty and will protect those she shares loyalty in with everything in her power. Power which she holds with ease.
