Not one to hold a grudge, despite her best efforts, Ridley simply gave a light chuckle at the words. “Hey, same to you,” She agreed, though she’d known of what Sera looked like, it was nice to talk in person for once. Ridley, for all her love of technology, could easily see where the struggles had been with communication through words alone. In the sea, especially, so much of language was dependent on body language, and you simply can’t convey that over a screen.
Sera spoke, and Ridley found herself listening raptly, with as much awe as she held for each and every one of the captains. For once, Ridley found herself nodding slowly, finding the ability to relate in the captain’s words - she, too, felt a worry similar to homesickness. That fear for her own sea; one lost to more chaos than the darkness that brought them all to town. She decided not to mention it, for now, for fear of getting Sera’s pity rather than her respect, or friendship. “You feel safe here?” She questioned, a tone of disbelief in her voice. “As if. This is just as scary as out there. Honestly, like, we could turn into seafoam any day, or get caught up by the IRS or the law, or something equally horrible. Yeah, like, it’s different, but… it’s not exactly safe, either. Don’t look at this as, like, a vacation.”
It felt almost easy to open herself up to Ridley as Seraphina saw the body language the other responded with to her own. The rapt attention that she was paid made her feel a warmth that had been missing that reminded her of home. Then the challenging tone that followed when Ridley spoke in answer sparked that warmth into an ember. Ridley spoke like someone in her own crew would have spoken to her and it felt nice to hear someone willing to do that. It was probably stupid to smile like a fool at the other woman but she did and part of her wanted to throw her arms around her.
“You remind me of home you know that,” Seraphina admitted softly as she admired the other brunette and smiled at her genuinely with a warmth in her eyes. “And you are right. Maybe I didn’t consider the dangers up here as clearly as I could have,” she added with a nod. Human issues had been what created them to begin with so it was hard to know which of those were good and which were bad. “I don’t see this as vacation but I still feel like it’s too easy. I feel like I should be doing more as a leader. Wouldn’t you want more of your own leader?”
