{1/3} Part of the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters, Mily Possoz (1888-1968) was a prominent artist with a body of work spanning drawing, painting, engraving, illustration and more. Born in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal to Belgian parents, Mily moved to Lisbon as a child. There she benefited from an exceptional artistic education, namely in painting, having attended the atelier of the painter Emília dos Santos Braga with several artists including her close friend Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. At 16, she continued her studies at the Académie de La Grand Chaumière in Paris, and in Germany where she learned engraving with Willy Spatz. In 1909, she returned to Portugal and joined the emerging modernist movement. There, Mily participated in several individual and group exhibitions, including with artist and longtime friend Alice Rey Colaço. She stood out for being the only female presence in the II Exhibition of Humorists in 1913 and in the Cinco Independentes in 1923, both crucial exhibitions in the affirmation of modernism in Portugal.
