Flying Lotus Post Requisite Flamagra (Warp, 5/24/19)
“Post Requisite” was probably the only good thing about Kuso, Steven Ellison’s first feature length film. Its brief calming two minutes of funky, sci-fi electronica were the only moments of respite during the horror film’s relentlessly grotesque cavalcade of viscera and excrement. It is not a surprise that Ellison’s music was his movie’s saving grace: In his decade-strong career as Flying Lotus, each of his albums have incrementally pushed the envelope of L.A. beatmaking, and “Post Requisite” is a reminder of the producer’s remarkable consistency. Even in this one-off instrumental, his sense of adventure is palpable, from the cosmic jazz piano line to the caressing harp plucks. While “Post Requisite” sits comfortably in Ellison’s usual sonic wheelhouse, its beautiful composition is a welcome reminder of Ellison’s curious musical mind.
