I like the idea that post-Cage Sam having difficulties believing in the reality, constantly forgot that he was out of the cage and so he had to re-introduce himself to reality again. That included the re-learning of 5 senses, and more than once, he was overwhelmed by the intensity of it. We already see Sam having sensory overload, but we hadn’t really seen the steps of re-learning the basic concept of reality in Sam. He would feel things just for the sake of it. Take a bit more time to just lay still on the mattress to feel the fabric under his back, chew food slowly to feel the movement of his jaw as well as the taste of said food, or letting himself stay still to hear the light chirping of birds outside the window, or trying slowly to read/write again, bonus if he need to re-learn the concept of speaking any language that was not screaming or begging for his life. Would love to see Sam get surprise at how gentle the vibration of our voice cord can be, how to speak without hurting his throat, how to listen to something doesn’t hurt his ears, how to see someone respond to his words right away and needn’t him to repeat it madly or scream it out. Would love to see Sam pauses at that, at every supposedly normal if not basic perception of life that he either forgot or got wiped out of him, and it would make it even better that someone could be by his side, waiting for him to join them in their life again, preferable Dean, if possible. All the jokes and teases still there, but sometime Dean would tone it down to wait for Sam acknowledging this world again, like a child, a fawn, like some creature first set the foot on earth. And the moment Sam got it, it will be like an awaking moment, like saying hello to the world again, introducing himself to something more vast and opening.
