Summary:
Sirius deserved this happiness, this second chance, and he wasn't going to question it too closely.
Comments:
THE BBB FIC OF ALL TIMES - REMIX VERSION by the one and only Victoria P, founder of the Remix Redux. Not only is the original fic really good, but this remix is a perfect example of what makes remixes so great:
This time we follow Sirius and we get to discover what happened to him when he fell through the veil.
The writing is very different, it's a good contrast to Remus' POV.
It's a great exploration of what could have been and what is. Sirius gets a second chance to make things right and to discover (and take) the love that's been always there.
Illustrative quote:
Sirius sucked in a deep breath. This was it. This was the night he'd convinced them to make the switch, to make Peter the Secret Keeper. He'd lived it over and over again in Azkaban, every word, every look, every doubt about Remus, about himself. He closed his eyes again, opened them, and stared down at his hands -- the skin smooth and supple and lightly tanned, rather than pale and ashy and pulled too tightly over prominent knuckles. He swallowed hard.
"So what's this brilliant plan of yours, then?" Lily prompted, and he felt a sob rise in his chest, choked it down. He didn't want to say the words. He wouldn't say the words. Not this time.
"Nothing," he replied, his voice thick and hoarse. "I thought I'd leave Remus the motorbike, is all. He knows how to take care of it; he'll know what it means if I leave it with him and don't come back." He drew a shuddering breath, heart hammering against his ribs. He'd never been able to change the memory before. Were the dementors losing power over him? Had he finally gone mad?

Summary:
The night after the day that Sirius Black fell through the veil, Remus Lupin made a number of promises to himself.
Comments:
What can I say about this fic that has not been said before? I don't think I'm the only one that considers this THE BBB FIC OF ALL TIMES (along with the remix).
The story starts right after Sirius falls through the veil and we jump a couple years later when Sirius misteriously comes back -- and Remus can tell something is not quite right.
What I like the most is that it's based on the fact that nothing ever happened between Remus and Sirius, that Remus regrets not telling Sirius he loved him and has to accept that he's gone forever... until he's not and Sirius starts acting all weird around him.
It has an introspective and emotional prose, perfect for Remus, who is learning to take advantage of the second chances that life has given him.
Illustrative quote:
He promised he would not forget how Sirius Black had been as a man, because even if it was agreed that he had never quite grown past twenty, and if he could not quite remember that Harry was not James and that times had changed, Remus knew that Sirius Black had been a good man, a good friend, and that perhaps, had fate been kinder or times been different, he might have grown into the man he could have been.
He did not, however, promise to stop loving Sirius Black. He knew better than to make promises he could not keep.

Summary:
Ginny finds a portrait in the attic at Grimmauld Place
Comments:
So well written and so so wonderful. Ginny's perspective is rich and her whole conversation with Sirius is heartbreakingly beautiful: her little lies to preserve his happiness, his reactions to what she tells him, his questions about Remus -- It captures the contrast between a young, happy and innocent Sirius and what ended up happening to him and the rest of his loved ones. And in return he gives Ginny a break from the reality of the war.
It breaks my heart every single time.
Illustrative quote:
"Lily? James got married to Evans?!" Sirius's laugh is just the same as Ginny remembers it, like a bark of joy. "What about me? Does Remus still... do you know me when I'm older? That's such an odd thing to say. Do you know a man called Remus Lupin?"
Ginny can't help smiling. Sirius's mood is infectious. "Oh, yes. Professor Lupin's just downstairs, talking to my mum."
"Professor?" It's a good thing, Ginny thinks to herself, that this Sirius is a creature of paint and canvas, because otherwise he'd rupture something. "You're joking, aren't you?"
