The Sumerian astrology would influence later Babylonian astrology and even the much later Greek astrology. The Sumerians dilligently recorded the sun, moon, planets and stars that they could see and eventually would come to map constellations as well as eventually defining the Zodiac which was as follows:
Hunga - “The Hired Man” Aries ♈️
Gugulana - “The Bull Of Heaven” Taurus ♉️
Mastabbagalgal - “The Great Twins” Gemini ♊️
Allul - “The Crab” Cancer ♋️
Urgula - “The Lion” Leo ♌️
Absin - “The Furrow” Virgo ♍️
Zibanitu - “The Scales” Libra ♎️
Girtab - “The Scorpion” Scorpio ♏️
Pabilsag - (The God Pabilsag) Sagittarius ♐️
Suhurmas - “The Goat-Fish” Capricorn ♑️
Gula - “The Great One” Aquarius ♒️
Simmah - “The Swallows” Pisces ♓️
Kunmes - “The Tails” South-West Pisces ♓️
This shows that as far back as Sumerian times the Zodiac is largely unchanged with a few exceptions: Aquarius as the great one instead of water-barer, Aries as the hired man instead of the ram, Virgo as the furrows, Sagittarius as the God Pabilsag and Pisces as swallows instead of fishes. Interestingly Libra is still seen as a scales of balance in Sumerian astrology while in later Greek mythology the sign was known as the “claws of the scorpion” before being related back to the scales in the modern age.
