Box Spring

Lex and I hadn't eaten since nine in the morning. The food our relatives served us was inedible: raw chicken, milly dressing, bland pasta, and salty green beans. Our dads told us to eat it or do without, while they ate seconds. We're here for a family reunion, but I think this is an excuse for the adults to act like kids, while everyone else suffers. For example, my dad threw his shoes up the balcony the moment we arrived at our hotel. Lex and her parents stayed at another hotel across the street, which was more expensive but reserved for family. Our hotel had a lobby, wi-fi, and continental breakfast: the bright sides of this family reunion. My family almost didn't go, because my dad wanted to "provide" us a vehicle - a cousin's used Daewoo that he fixed - instead of renting a car. "Either take it, or don't go," my dad told me, Mom, and my little sister Courtney. My brother refused to come with us; he didn't have money, which translated to "I don't want to deal with Dad."

Mein großer Plan

"We wanna be the hundred-year startup" - Worte des Mitbegründers und ehemaligen (!)* CEOs von evernote.com. Ich denke, Evernote ist so gut wie jedem ein Begriff, wenn nicht: Wikipedia [nachfolgend "W" abgekürzt] hilft. Und weil ich schon dabei bin, ist es zwar schön (...), dass die Tante W in der dt. Version eine Aussage aus dem Ärmel zaubert - Zitat: "Das Ziel des Unternehmens ist es nach eigenen Angaben, auch in hundert Jahren noch zu bestehen." - und es mit eine YT-Video als Quelle belegt (...), allerdings sollte man dann auch schon richtig ausformulieren. Ich denke, so viel an Englischkenntnissen kann ich von W-Schreiberlingen abverlangen. Aber schaut euch einfach mal das Video an, und urteilt selbst, ob der Satz auch wirklich richtig interpretiert wurde.

Wem das noch nicht reicht, hier noch ein kleines Zitat aus einem Interview mit derselben Person, verlinkt in der englischsprachigen Version von W, erschienen bei doeswhat.com.

"We don’t just want to build a 100 year company, we want to build a 100 year startup."

Ein Hoch auf die Amis an dieser Stelle. Und just an gleicher Stelle wird sich der ein oder andere sicherlich jetzt fragen, warum ich das alles erwähne.

Die Antwort: Ich suchte überhaupt nicht nach Evernote [und Fehlern in der dt. W]. Meine Suche galt einer unabhängigen und möglichst kostenlosen Bloggerplattform** für eine spezielle Sache. "Mein großer Plan" ... wird sicherlich keine 100 Jahre bestehen (...), aber er soll mich bzw. mein Heteronym ℐlasŢradamuⓈ in guter Hoffnung für längere Zeit begleiten. Genau an diesem Punkt stellen sich jetzt wohl noch mehr Fragen, zwei davon will ich sogleich aufgreifen und beantworten.

Und 2.) Hat es - ℐlasŢradamuⓈ - nicht schon eine eigene Spielwiese?

Ja, hier auf Blogspot, aber jenes Blog dient eher einer Erzählung. Womit wir schon beim entscheidenden Punkt wären: "Mein großer Plan" sieht - kurz umrissen - vor, häufiger, aber kürzer in die Tasten zu hauen, das allerdings ohne Qualitätseinbußen, aber dennoch mit Abstrichen im Sinne von weniger reflektierten Inhalten. Und genau hier wären wir schon fast am Ende, denn ich fand für dieses "Projekt" über Umwege zu jenem Evernote. Eher zufällig (- wie oft -) stieß ich auf eine andere Spielwiese im Internet, die nicht mal einen W-Eintrag (oder eine Erwähnung dort) hat, obgleich es das Unternehmen schon seit über 6 Jahren gibt. Die Rede ist von postach.io, die mit diesem Slogan werben: "Turn an Evernote notebook into a beautiful blog or web site." Geil, dachte ich mir. Das ist es! Und das wurde es.

Abschließend kurz erwähnt notiert: Wer jetzt mit dem Gedanken spielt, da - bei postach.io - auch loszulegen, der sollte sich schon im Klaren sein, dass es ein paar Hürden zu meistern gibt, will man da richtig durchstarten. Ich erkläre das jetzt nicht, aber wem es interessiert, der fragt mich einfach.

* In der dt. W steht, er wäre noch CEO, ist aber aktuell nur noch Executive Chairman (Link). ** WP war keine Alternative. Mit deren Werbebannern haben die sich bei mir unbeliebt gemacht. Wer einen Account dort hat, der melde sich doch mal ab und schaut sich ein paar kostenlose Blogs an (vielleicht mein "Backup" von ℐlasŢradamuⓈ ). Ich habe es getan und entschieden für mich festgestellt: Es ist grässlich, und obendrein chancenlos für nahezu jeden Adblocker. Nichts gegen Werbung, aber das ist überzogen.

Postach.io is going paid only

Well I guess I should not be surprised, but my favorite blogging tool, Postach.io, is going paid only. I did not use it as much as I should have but I really loved the fact that I could author my content in Evernote and then simply publish it to my blog. I used this service since it was in early beta and I was very impressed. I understand their need to increase revenue, and I wish them all the best. The truth is that I just don't blog enough to justify the cost - especially when I already have several other online blogging properties (like this one on Tumblr). On the plus side I guess I can finally consolidate my blogs into one and stop trying to figure out what content should go where. Maybe now I should spend some time and get a better Tumblr template going.

Postach.io

Here's a service that helps you "collect and share content" from your storage and documentation tools (like Dropbox and Evernote). Dropbox is an easy-to-use cloud storage space, and Evernote is a fantastic way to capture and store content that you want to continue to interact with, in case you haven't heard of or even used either. But Postach.io can help you select and present this content. The shortcoming of Dropbox and Evernote is that they can seem static. There's stuff just sitting in there. They beg you to be able to look at it in a new way. Eportfolios lack strong capture functionality, making it difficult to smoothly integrate documentation into learning processes, and capture technologies lack presentation.

Postach.io brings this. It's also an organic way to go about a learning eportfolio, and is one step closer to using technology to enhance documentation design, because you play an active role in capturing content, selecting it and presenting it.

But how can we integrate learning science into learning technology? Curation Interactive likes to use these tools to help students document and present process. But we're still exploring the idea of how get features of these tools pick up some of the mechanical work of documentation design pedagogy - how to make connections, use the connections to form pathways to content and to personalize learning.

What News?

I’ve been reading about the obsession with email newsletters recently and its got me thinking again about my love / hate relationship with RSS. Despite my attempts to tame my feeds I am almost always a day behind (or about 300 feed items). Increasingly I’ve been frustrated by the amount of duplication (inspite of the Yahoo Pipes tailoring) and reading through the pile feels more like a chore every day.

The plan now is to cut right back and try to de-duplicate as much as possible. I’ve signed up for the following daily newsletters:

NextDraft The Verge TechCrunch LifeEdited LifeHacker Fast Company

and just the one weekly, newsletter. I’m also trying out some Podcasts:

CNET, Tomorrow Daily BBC Click TechCrunch, Crunch Week Engadget The Guardian, Tech Weekly The Vergecast Wired.co.uk BBC Trending The Economist

The idea is that the most noteworthy stuff will percolate to the top. I’ve also been very please to see the adoption of G+ coming along nicely, particularly for tech news I’m finding that I often hear about things there first. I’m hopeful that this method will allow me to keep up without becoming overloaded. I’ve got a day job to do after all!

I've been thinking about auto forwarding these to Instapaper and using this to manage all my reading, but I'm not sure about that yet.

Solar Power Advances

Over the last week there have been a couple of interesting developments in the advancements in solar panels.    Firstly a team at Michigan State University have developed solar panels which are nearly invisible, thus opening up the possibility of windows made of solar panels.   Secondly a method has been developed which may bring us close to the magic 50% conversion efficiency.  Its a shame this has been marred by reports of bird deaths in the desert....
