The Neighborhood Time Exchange Closes Out With A Series of Events

The Neighborhood Time Exchange is wrapping up this past year of artist work in residence, celebrating their creative and service work. We have planned a series of events which we would like to invite you to. From lectures to art showing, to a performance piece, these final works we hope will serve as a fitting remembrance of this past year.

Panel Discussion: What’s Being Made? Questioning the Making of Place, Change and Space in the City

6:00PM–8:00PM

Taking place at New Century Trust, 1307 Locust Street. This panel will be introduced and moderated by Justin Langlois and Gabriel Saloman, curators and co-creators of Neighborhood Time Exchange. The panel will include: Daniel Tucker, Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Director in Social and Studio Practices at Moore College of Art and Design; Prof. Rickie Sanders, Professor of Geography/Urban Studies and former Director of Women's Studies at Temple University; Amber Art & Design including members (possibly Keir Johnston, Linda Fernandez & Ernel Martinez).

In the Cut: by Pato Hebert and Rebecca Rose

This performance invites community members to reflect on that which has been lost, discovered, and created in their lives. A cut can be a loss, truncation or removal, but it can also be an opening, groove or release. Join us at 46th & Fairmount Avenue to experience a pathway cut into this grassy lot, extending to the center of the property where a large circle will welcome guests with music and conversation. This project invites community members to consider the both challenging and liberating changes that have occurred in their lives.

RECIPROCITY: Exhibiting Moments and Momentum from Neighborhood Time Exchange – Opening Reception

5:00PM–8:00PM

All are welcome to join us at 4017 Lancaster on Second Friday in November for a free public reception which marks the conclusion of the Neighborhood Time Exchange residency and celebrates the artwork created throughout the past year. The studio facility will be transformed into a group exhibition featuring works of art created by all 15 participating artists as well as documentation of community-based activities and service projects.

“ A Congregation Preview of the Centennial Commemorative Wall Hanging Oct. 11, 201511:30 AM to 11:45 AM 

New Bethlehem Baptist Church 

Preston & Aspen Streets Philadelphia, PA 19104 I received a request to preview the Centennial Commemorative Wall Hanging to the congregation on October 11th. At a later date, the church office will announce the installation of the wall hanging. The official Centennial Celebration takes place in 2016. “

The above images were taken by Meredith Degyansky at the 5th Annual Belmont Resource, Health, and Environment Fair. This event was organized by Betty Ferguson and the Belmont Alliance Civic Association. Meredith was able to provide flyers and chalkboard signs for the event, as well as take many pictures for the organizations to use. The fair brought the community together for free food, games, children’s activities, free diapers, blood glucose testing, HIV testing, bike safety checks and lots of entertainment. Rose Samuel-Evans from the Dornsife Center even had an opportunity to perform an empowering piece of her own writing about the Black Lives Matter movement. It was a great day, and Meredith was honored to have been invited to participate!

Artist in residence John Philips has been spear heading and effort to paint the barricades  at 34th and Mantua for an eventual mural of tulips. Saturday, September 5th, the above intrepid group of volunteers gathered to paint a base coat on those barriers in preparation of the final design. The barricade will be completed by community members and Time Exchange artists by the end of September.

On August 15th the HUB Coalition, conjunction with a variety of community organizations, held a march and rally to commemorate the 50th anniversary of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,’s Freedom Now Rally in the Mantua Neighborhood. Artist in Residence John Phillips was asked to document the event, and create a documentary featuring the speakers and marchers, as well as interviews with local residents who were at the original event. John is working now to compile and edit a final edition of the film. We congratulate the HUB coalition on a successful event celebrating such an important day!

Artists in residence Pato Hebert and Brian Bazemore were recently able to do some sun print making with students at Ms. Rose Bryant’s Playhouse. These young artists had a great time participating in this project. Brian is now finalizing a project he and Pato began, designing and then producing t-shirts for the group. The shirts will feature a sleeve patch designed by the students in the program.

Pato Hebert is an artist in residence whose time with us has already ended. Though Pato was only at the Time Exchange for a month, during that time he was able to complete numerous projects as well as work on some of his own practice. Pictured above is one of Pato’s projects, The Oscillator. The Oscillator is a visual arts project that Pato began long before his time with us, but he was able to document in the areas around Philadelphia as well. Below is a selection from the Artist’s Statement about the project

In, If Not Quite Of is a series of performances for the camera in which The Oscillator appears in various landscapes. The Oscillator reflects its environment, without simply or easily being of its context. Inspired by Buddhist notions of interconnectedness and the limitations of the ego, The Oscillator queries our relationship to place and space, our false distinctions between human and nature, the possibilities of interspecies dialogue. Where do we feel like we belong? When are we comfortable in our own skin? What makes us feel like aliens? What do we define as ours, sacred, everyday, untouched? Who and what are excluded by these delineations? How might we connect with all that is around us, to all that is us without simply making “us” the center of a myopic worldview?

The Neighborhood Time Exchange is so grateful for Pato’s participation in the project, his outstanding work in the neighborhood, and his creativity as an artist.

In April local resident Ms. Ernestine Harris presented the Time Exchange with a plan to improve a garden in the community as well as add some signage. Artists in residence Macon Reed and Matt Neff began work on the project together, doing work in the garden and organizing efforts around clean up and weeding. They worked with folks at PEC to aquire flowers and organize volunteers for clean up, and Matt was able to help design large signs. When the next cohort began their residency, artists Lucy Pistilli and Brian Bazemore were able to complete the signs, and will install them Saturday, August 8th from 11am – 1pm.  They will join the Women of Belmont in installing their new RESPECT YOUR BLOCK signs, to be located in community green space located at the corner of Brooklyn & Ogden.  The work in collaboration between the Women of Belmont as well as two cohorts of artists is truly inspiring
