October Spooky Writing Challenge Day 6 - Postcard Perfect
A silver car struggling along a winding road. The scratches, the whining of the engine betray its age but the women inside are smiling. Mother and daughter, out for a day in the countryside. They’ll have a good time today, I’m sure.
The village is sprawled across a level plain on the mountainside, surrounded by bushes and heady roses. There’s a rush that can be heard throughout-a river, unusually loud for its altitude. Maybe it’s crying. A crumbling church, exquisite carvings held up by climbing vines. That’s the centre. All the roads branch out from it with petals of cafes and houses all with withering people inside.
Our new visitors are in a shop, choosing between flowing scarves, when the shopkeeper asks if they planned to stay long. The mother replies brightly they’ll be leaving before dark. He nods, his eyes hard, unable to say any more.
The roses grow everywhere, flowers of all shades adorning the brickwork. Petals scatter on the road. They whirl in the breeze through the streets, a perfume, dancers in the warm air. Wilted rose heads also line the paving. Their hacked stalks are left on the buildings, villagers with choppers brushing the blooms away.
In the afternoon the shadows stretch. It exposes the angles of the buildings, the angles on the faces of those left here stirring their tea in the quiet street. In such a remote place the only sounds are calling birds, the rustle of the trees and the sound of a car starting up.
Our newcomers are going home.
They glide over the central streets but trying to exit is a rollercoaster. They’ve enjoyed their day, they’re smiling still. All ready to go back to their family in the city.
And then-
They crash.
Burn.
The daughter crawls out, bleeding, staring at the twisted metal, the invisible wall that made it that way. She runs to her mother’s door but it seems welded. Broken. She screams as fire from the engine starts to lick her fingers.
A group of the residents stand at the foot of the car, death’s own messengers. Some of them being wanderers like her. Some of them running to save her mother. All of them knowing it’s too late.
Postcard perfect? Yes, that’s a nice phrase. It suits the idyllic scenery, the blooming flowers. It’s a picturesque postcard from any angle.
It’s just a shame no one can leave to deliver one.

Spider Sculpture, Tokyo
The amazing spider sculpture shown above is the work of artist Louise Bourgeois, and is one of the largest sculptures ever made.
Over 30ft high and 33ft wide, a version of the spider named ‘Maman’ can be found in different locations throughout the world, including this one at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The original resides at the Tate Modern in London.
You may notice the ‘sac’ at the bottom on the spider, which contains 26 marble eggs. ‘Maman’ is the French word for ‘Mother’, and the sculpture represents the artist’s view of strength, perseverance, and protection of her own mother, who passed away at a young age. [Original Post]
