gonna be honest, if I cried for a hundred years over my daughter's body, and then someone who was directly involved in executing her showed up and was like "we're all made of stardust and stardust is forever so it's not like she even really died," that person would not live to see the sunrise
after reevaluation (good omens 3 trailer, tickets to tadc finale, zukka revival) I've decided that everything is okay, actually.
HANIF ABDURRAQIB
Transmasc lautity????? Details pretty please?????
Okay so I started writting out a response to this post but then I accidentally now have like 1000+ words on a document explaining an entire au and even *I* recognize thats a LOT to put into one ask, so I'm just going to hit the bullet points of that and maybe reblog this with alllllllllllll the details and yapping later
(future Ups here, I still made a long ass post I'm sorry)
Also I've accepted that this is just like 90% headcanon 10% canon at this point. I never get this far into fanon but here I am. I've done it.
Steph
Steph (he/she/they) figures out he's pan pretty early but doesn't realize he's trans till high school
This is because she starts hanging out with Richie, Ruth, and Pete after they all got paired up in a group project together and like they're all trans (Richie is a trans guy, Ruth is a demigirl, and Pete is an egg too)
Steph and Pete bond with each other over having weird gender thoughts and they help each other figure things out and come to terms with their own gender identities (Steph and Pete are nonbinary transfemme and nonbinary transmasc solidarity to me in this au)
He ends up being more open and out after this
I think Steph is comfortable expressing femininity and masculinity because he's so secure in his own gender. It's all drag to him at this point and he doesn't give a fuck about what other people think anymore.
The summer before their freshman year of college they get a job and start saving up for top surgery
Grace
Grace (he/they) always had a complicated relationship with gender
he remembers growing up in the church and hearing women couldn't lead the church or teach to men but they felt like that's what he was called to do
the combined experience of religious misogyny and gender dysphoria made it difficult for him to disentangle what fears and desires were a byproduct of wanting to resist misogyny and what were from a genuine desire to be seen as a man later down the line
he doesn't recognize it but he gets massive gender envy from steph in highschool
she just dresses however she wants and does whatever he pleases and Grace gets so mad at them
they devote their efforts into trying to convert Steph to Christianity because obviously they get so upset about Steph because he's such a sinner right
eventually Steph gets fed up with this and essentially clocks his tea and accuse Grace of being an egg and Grace never messes with him again after that
And they were roommates
by a wacky turn of events Steph and Grace end up roommates their freshman year of college. They do passive aggressive roommate petty shit for a while
eventually Grace goes to Bible study and everyone is like "you should be nicer to him because WWJD" and Grace begrudgingly starts being nicer to Steph and leaves them out breakfast and such
this is the beginning of a tentative friendship between the two
Steph tries bible study, grace tries partying, they start sharing their lives with each other
turns out they both have overbearing dads, except one of them is a mayor and the other existed before time itself
I think eventually they address the elephant in the room which is Grace being bigoted in high school, hanging out with Steph and his friends really opened up his eyes, and he doesn't know where he stands and how he feels about it all spiritually, but seeing trans joy firsthand makes it hard to condemn
I also think he starts seriously looking his own gender envy in the eye and he and Steph have conversations about that
Eventually Grace comes to terms with the fact that he might be trans and Steph is super patient about it
He still has a crap ton of religious guilt about it though
Time for the Gay yearning
Grace starts sorting out his gender and everything, and as he starts socially transitioning with the people closest to him he starts feeling differently about Steph. He used to feel so much envy and anger towards him, but now those feelings are replaced with something else that's pretty big that he can't quite describe.
On the other hand, watching Grace come into themself and seeing them direct their passion into something more constructive makes Steph realize how Grace is a much deeper person than he thought. After all Steph thought he was a judgmental Bible thumper, but they wouldn't be friends without that Bible study lesson. Now he gets to see Grace finally happy with himself and it's genuinely moving.
Grace has always had underlying attraction for Steph, but his gender envy was getting in the way of him recognizing those feelings
and Steph low key just always thought Grace was annoying until now
Steph becomes aware of her feelings and tries to give Grace his space, but it's really hard for her not to flirt with him like all the time.
Grace has no idea that they're gay and in love with their roommate
they start acting like a married couple and don't address anything
I do think they have a torturous make out and not address it phase before Pete, Ruth and Richie knock some sense into them
Eventually they do get together
I've not developed this part in my mind as much but they both get together
I think Grace helps take care of Steph post top surgery later down the line and vice versa
they're just a happy t4t couple
also probably insert some more religious angst for Grace but for once I wasn't focusing on that as much
but yeah!

Find me
"In another life" they say
But I need you in this one
I wish that things were easier
And wish that I was your one
Your name was in my birthday wish
And all my shooting stars
I look for you in every room
And all the passing cars
