I know I'm like eight days late. And that I pester you all the time. But talk to me about Alex/Lando.
i am even later! i just haven't been feeling well and i wanted to do this post justice because i love alex/lando soooooo much!!!!!!
one thing i was thinking about is how lando's, in many ways, a very generous person. we know he loves to pay for a date (you're not paying on a date because in fact he's already prepaid), for his friends on their holidays, for george's mates just because... they showed up i guess? and he's a very generous winner. he has not stopped talking about oscar since he won the wdc, what a good driver oscar is, how much he respects oscar, how he knows oscar is going to make his life hell this year.
and i think there's something lovely about generosity, but it also comes from a place of power. lando can be generous in paying because he's got so much money. he can be generous about oscar being a worthy adversary because he's the one who won.
and what i think is so interesting about lando and alex is that lando's admiration of alex isn't "generous".
lando had alex's poster on his wall because he admired alex, as a fan. lando was tiny and looked much younger than he was and wasn't very winning at karting (although, we're not surprised to learn, he's exaggerated how bad his karting record was and he did actually win much earlier than he says he did).
but alex was TALL he was a BEAST at karting, like he was particularly skilled.
and it's so interesting to think about the vulnerability that comes from lando talking about that - his wee little childhood self, being a fan of someone who is theoretically also his peer (unlike rossi, who is so much older).
the thing that makes me the most feral is that i feel like alex responds to lando's vulnerability with such tenderness. alex is obviously notorious for being kind and very well liked, but i think his "nice guy" thing is like also tempered through his very british personality of constantly teasing and riling people up and c o m p l a i n i n g. obviously teasing is a love language, but i think so often we see this bit of an edge with alex, and it's absolutely fascinating to me how he's not like that with lando.
that moment on drive to survive last season where he said he thinks people just need to leave lando alone was so deeply kind, and like... a lot more than drivers typically say for each other. even when alex was doing that bff video with george and george was like, oh yeah, the guy we both hate, lando, hee hee. alex didn't particularly play along. where george goes around being an absolute shit to lando, and george and alex so gleefully are shits to each other, there's this really different vibe between alex and lando, and i think it is so so so interesting.
we don't have that many moments with them, but somehow each moment is like even better than the last. what do you mean alex gave lando a little good luck present as part of the grill the grid secret santa thing that was so kind they couldn't show it on camera??????????
and know we're just supposed to go on like everything's normal?
