Anne Hunt and Sarah Smith were part of a group of ballet dancers performing at the Prince's Theatre one evening. As they moved around the stage, Anne came a little too close to the footlights, and a spark from them set fire to her elaborate, and highly flammable, costume. Sarah Smith instantly went to help her colleague, but trying to put out the fire led to her own dress catching light. Both fires were out out by the stage manager, and the women were taken to hospital. Sarah received burns to over a third of her body, and died several days later. As a domestic servant, Elizabeth Coghlam was occasionally left to look after her employer's two little boys. One evening the boys were sleeping upstairs while Elizabeth refilled the household's oil lamps. When one of the lamps caught fire she rushed to get it out of the house so it wouldn't eat the building alight. Sadly though the flames caught her clothes instead, and her panicked screams were heard by a neighbour and a man passing by. Alice Ayres was sleeping in a room with her employer's three young daughters, when fire broke out downstairs. When she woke up and realised what was going on, her first thought was for the girls. The crowd outside shouted for her to jump, but instead she threw a mattress out the window to give a better landing, and then threw out each girl in turn. Unfortunately when it came to jumping out herself, Alice missed the mattress and landed on the road, fracturing her spine. She died two days later in hospital.
