Optimist: The cup is half full
Pessimist: The cup is half empty
Poststructuralist: Let's look at the cup itself; the cup is both and neither half full and half empty because the glass can be empty of the signifier, water, and be full of the signified, air,
I think I am beginning to understand a major philosophical misunderstanding that a lot of conservative Christians have about people in the left.
In my observation there are some conservative Christians out there who believe that deconstructing certain beliefs or having a worldview that is not conservative is antithetical to the concept of “truth” itself. They stereotype people with other beliefs (especially leftist beliefs) as people who just believe whatever they feel like and truth doesn’t matter or even exist, so of course that supposed worldview doesn’t make sense to a conservative Christian.
I don’t know jack shit about “postmodernism”, but this seems to be what a lot conservatives think postmodernism is, and they seem to associate this philosophy with “leftism” 🤷🏼♀️ for some reason.
I don’t know if any of that makes sense, and I’m sure some conservatives are just willfully ignorant and like to “straw man” leftists by making them seem stupid, but there MUST be some way we can fight this narrative.
We NEED to get conservative Christians to understand that being against war, authoritarianism, poverty, prejudice, and environmental and public health destruction doesn’t make someone a weird, stupid person who doesn’t believe in the concept of absolute truth.
IDK what about fighting for justice and freedom for oppressed people looks like “not believing in truth” to them but what do I know? 🤷🏼♀️
All I know is that identifying as a more progressive type of Christian instead of a conservative one doesn’t necessarily make one’s theology “weak” or incompatible with truth. At what point are you just worshipping the concept of “truth” itself?

“It was as if the woman had become addicted to melancholia as one becomes addicted to opium. Now do you see how it is? Her sadness becomes her happiness. She wants to be a sacrificial victim, Smithson. Where you and I flinch back, she leaps forward. She is possessed, you see.” He sat down again. “Dark indeed. Very dark.”
