Some sort of supervillain needs to come around and rustle the earth's jimmies so that we realize that we are not alone out there and open our minds a bit to other potentials.  Then, in order to rid the planet of this evil force, we would use our technological advancements to create some sort of super-weapon or superhero type thing (we do have the potential if we really put our minds to it).
