Wold - Postsocial
Quick Album Review: Postsocial- Wold
How does one describe Wold’s music to someone who has never heard it? Fortress Crookedjaw, the man behind the vocals and electronics, has said “Wold doesn’t really feel part of anything” and while a statement like that is often a self-congratulatory expression of individuality, in this case it really rings true. You could call Postsocial a “black metal” album or you could call it a “noise” album, but it stands out from the typical sound of those scenes. It is harsh enough to make you feel uncomfortable but hypnotic enough to slip you into a haze, which is exactly what makes Postsocial a fascinating piece of hostility. The five songs on here all tremble with haunting lo-fi, consisting of a throbbing muddle of sounds, the only truly identifiable of which being Crookedjaw’s freakish screams. The shrill tone of his voice brings the “black metal” into this album, but it is also what makes it come alive. The smear of putrid, unidentifiable noise would only get Wold so far without the key element, and observing what he does with his vocals is the big draw here. Postsocial will fall into a crumbling ambience, but Crookedjaw never simmers down. On ‘Five Points’ you can hear an actual tune somewhere within the ataxia, but as recognizable chords and words fall into the mix they only serve as a template. Patterns come about, capturing you as you spot them. Drones appear only to send chills down your spine. There is no easy way to do Postsocial justice with words, but as the atmospheric mystery unravels, it will definitely make you feel something. 8/10 Recommended Music
"Five Points," Wold Postsocial (Profound Lore, 2014)
Song of the week (month) for sure. Tune out the static, and notice how beautiful the guitar sounds (my favorite is from 4:30 onward). It's only in shit this noisy that you can get a sound like that, compressed and humming.
I have been enjoying picking through this album and hearing little details every time. The first time, it was just static, and now I can hear nuances and have vague ideas of how the songs are laid out.
I like things that remind me of Metal Machine Music, and Postsocial is definitely an inheritor to the "engulfing waves of obnoxious guitar noise" thing. I like this album because it's all-encompassing, I can just fade into it without worrying.
