During this period I can finally get out for some photography work and yesterday while looking for Amphibians I met “my friend” the freshwater crab (Potamon fluviatile). A young specimen was hiding in a shallow stream under the edge vegetation. I approached it, put my underwater housing mid-way for a split image of it in its own habitat. A few weeks ago I was shooting toadlets along a small stream in Central Italy. While photographing the little fella I posted a few days ago, I continued hearing a very soft bubbling sound close to me, on the shore of the small stream I was in. So I left the toadlet alone and gently turned the flat stone under which I believed the sound was coming from. To my delight there was a young freshwater crab (Potamon fluviatile), looking at me while standing outside of its burrow. I was using the 24mm probe, so I put it very low on the gravel, the camera almost into water and took one or two images of it. Then I gently put the flat stone back in place making sure the crab wouldn’t bother and once again, left that place with a bunch of great memories. Those small hidden corners of beauty are so precious for all of us. They’re a retreat for many animals and for us too, when needed.
