ASK ME ONE MORE TIME IF I AM VEGAN…
Because given the fact you can find me halfway through an omelette every Saturday and Sunday between noon and 2 pm answers that question a million times over. I am an omelette fanatic, an egg adorer, a vegetarian because I love chickens and wouldn’t want to kill what makes my brunches.
A little backwards and evil? Meh.
I am indeed picky about eggs and do still have phases where I am *so* grossed out by them in food, but 9/10 that’s a texture thing or because I know if that egg was on a hot surface for another two minutes it would be infinitely better. #Brunchbitch alert. The past couple weekends I have kicked the egg game out of the park as I’ve eaten approximately 20-25 eggs cooked various ways, from poached to over-easy to scrambled (my absolute least favorite) to 3-egg omelettes. Maybe it’s the fact my body is constantly devoid of protein and iron, maybe I’m predictable, maybe there’s just something so beautiful the way an egg looks with veggies and crispy potatoes on a plate. Put a little egg and cheese on a piece of sourdough toast? Unreal. Un-fucking-real to me.
* Side note: As I’m almost 21 I’ve made the choice to swear on this blog, as in real swears I don’t bleep out with asterisks bringing this from a family blog to a PG-13 blog. Sorry if you like to read this out loud to your kids as they fall asleep and dream of tacos & cake & all those good things. *
My favorite place for brunch in the city is ever-evolving, so here is a breakdown of eggs n’ things that I’ve eaten. Why do people read this? I don’t know! I’m literally talking about omelettes!
1. Tweet: Let’s Eat. Here is the deal: I have blogged about Tweet before, and I love tweet with my whole soul. Is it the absolute best food? Honestly, no. It is *good* and *decadent* and for sure fills that brunch void, but it teeters on the edge of bland sometimes. It’s the perfect atmosphere to sit in for hours at brunch and their full, FULL bar stirs up Oscar-worthy Bloody Mary’s, bellinis, and screwdrivers however that is the key selling point to me. I love sitting in the front platform area near the window, where it’s flooded with light and it’s cute and cozy and you feel like you’re a true millennial out at an Insta-worthy brunch that you can wear a sweatshirt or a dress & giant hat to. If that makes sense. I DIGRESS- the food IS exactly what most are looking for, and their menu caters to every diet need and taste-bud there can be. Gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, they have breakfast and lunch food out the wazoo- and it’s beautiful, huge portions. I’ve had some of the best iced coffee I’ve ever had there too. I just know it *could* be better food- but the company is always, always worth it. My top two orders: Eggs Florentine Benedict with lots of hot sauce, and the gluten-free Pumpkin Pancakes. Read menu here and take note it is CASH ONLY!
2. Tavern on Rush. Tavern is a top hit for when the parents are in town, there’s a fancy dinner needing to be held somewhere, and for when drinks before a gala are to be consumed. However, summertime Chi has its own rules, and all places offering brunch on the weekends can expect a mix of attendees. There will be nicely dressed couples and austere families, but there will also be beach-goers in shorts and rompers (ahem, us) and pajama wearers and definitely, definitely athletic/athleisure wearers to be found, all sitting in the coveted patio tables spilling onto the bustling, sunny streets of Chicago that have hit full-bloom and have the energy of a day-time party. Kind of sleepy, kind of hyped, 100% hungry and drunk. Me and my Gold Coast girl Sophia were in dire need of a #drink and #food and ended up at Tavern as she’s raved about it for who knows how long, and it’s truly in the perfect location so I went for it. We got seated in this kick-ass balcony just over the patio below that was packed, and from our little table for two in the shade we could see up and down the entirety of Rush & Oak. It was really, really awesome.
Waitress was willing to hook us up so mimosas and Bloody’s were ordered, and then I went hog wild and got an omelette with chives, asparagus, and brie all melted in there. This was a 3-4 egg omelette with brie medallions placed throughout, and hunks of crisp asparagus that brought the right dynamic with the creamy cheese. With seared & crispy potato slips it was a *heavy* plate of food but show-stopping honestly, and not nearly as expensive as I would have thought. Tavern is nice but fairly priced, which I appreciate, and with a hummus plate for the table I left beyond full but beyond happy. Omelette AND view? Damn. I CANNOT wait to go back and try everything else, this may be my #1 spot atm. Read menu here!
Until next time, Happy Eating!
