“Why’d You Walk Away” - the Potential Johns
I don't remember this show well. Perhaps I was smoking cigarettes and drinking beers outside?
This is the song (and version) that made me become a lifelong fan of this guy way back in 1997. My friend Harry and I kept rewinding it over and over, all the windows down, driving all night and watching the sun rise over west Texas.
Potential Johns - Chinese Telephones Split
Label: Cheeky Git Records
Released: 2007
Genre: Punk
Notes
As we've eluded to before, the Potential Johns were essentially Jeff Burke's solo project. All of the band's songs were recored in the late 90s in his home studio but never officially released. The tracks did find their way out through CD-R's and mix tapes made by both Burke and his friends. In the early 2000's, even more songs found there way into the public realm with the rise in popularity of mp3 sharing services.
For this release, five of the songs were rerecord and paired with four songs from Milwaukee's Chinese Telephones (who were often recorded and produced by both Burke and Mark Ryan). As with most of their releases, this album features artwork done by Jeff's brother (and owner of Mad World Records), Mark.
