TYPES OF POTIONS:
Philtre - water based, delicate ingredients.
Infusion - typically water based. delicate ingredients. prepared by soaking the leaves of a plant or herb in hot water or alcohol between 5 and 10 minutes.
Decoction - typically water based. an infusion prepared by simmering a tougher substance, such as a bark, for 10 to 30 minutes.
Tincture - alcohol based, keeps for up to a year. prepared by letting your ingredients soak in alcohol for a week. must be taken in small doses.
Vinegar - similar to a tincture, but instead of alcohol you use vinegar. made to be put into food.
Syrup - ingredients preserved in sugar solution, it’s basically an infusion or decoction with sugar added. must be taken in small doses.
Poultice - chopped plant material, compressed and pressed against the body or a wound with a piece of cloth, can be infused with potions.
Formentation - clothes dipped in potions, compressed.
Salve - oil or fat based, thick and creamy, for external application only.
Elixir - alcohol based, very pure.
Tisane - hot, water based, herbal extract.
Macerate - cold, water based, plant infusion, requires up to 12 hours.
Essential Oils - diluted extracts.
Inhalation - vapor from a potion.
