David de Gea becomes the first player to lift this coveted award four times, surpassing three-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
Jose has returned to the stage to announce this evening's final winner - a special achievement award for Michael Carrick.
Jose paid a lovely tribute to Carrick, saying: “I have to admit that one of the most difficult things in my 18 years as a manager is when a big player is leaving - it is always very sad. So this time we try to do it in a way where I am not sad. A big player is leaving but a big man is staying. There is a space for him and we will welcome him with open arms but, before that, we still want Michael to play and then the next day give his boots to his kids."
Carrick presents the Players' Player of the Year... David De Gea!
Carrick: "I think it’s a special one because day in, day out we work together. You can’t kid the players, the players see everything. I was lucky enough to win it a few years ago. I don’t know what the lads have voted for, maybe they’ve left me out!"
Congratulations Demetri Mitchell, the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year!
To end the night, which raised £135,500 for the Foundation, De Gea and Carrick joined MUTV in the studio. "I'm happy to have this trophy again," said De Gea. "I didn't even expect to win it once; now I have four it's a dream - it's hard to say in words but I am happy."
Carrick added: "Some of his saves have been verging on ridiculous. When you have David behind you, it calms everything down; it gives you confidence and composure. For the defenders, it's important to have a stable goalkeeper and year on year, he’s got better and better. He's taken it to another level and who knows how much better he can become. We're so happy he's playing for us because he's saved us a lot of points."
Jose just gifted Carrick with:
- a coaching t-shirt
- a whistle
- a bottle of Advil for the upcoming headaches
