Browsing Offers to Find Even More Savings
In past blog entries we’ve talked about using the PowerSaver icon () to find money-saving offers on the things you buy the most and the stores where you love to shop. This saves you money on those expenses that you have on a regular basis, which can save you big in your weekly budget. But not everything you buy is something you buy often, and you don’t always go to the exact same stores. This is where category browsing on the Offers tab of your PowerWallet comes in handy.
Let’s say you’re shopping around for a new TV. Just click on the Offers tab of your PowerWallet and choose Electronics from the “View offers in” menu. Any current offers related to Electronics from thousands of retailers and service providers will appear right there for you to browse. Within seconds, you find deals that can save you hundreds off that 52” LED HDTV you wanted. Just click SHOP NOW and follow the instructions to get big savings on your purchase without wasting time shopping around for the best deal.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, you can select “Gifts and Flowers” or “Fragrance and Cologne” to find great discounts on gifts for your Valentine. Before you book your next vacation, you can select “Travel” to see the most up-to-date deals from all those online travel sites on airfare, accommodations, and car rentals. You can even see those special Getaway deals that they offer if you don’t already have your vacation planned out, so you can take that trip to London you’ve always dreamed of because you find a deal for 40% of hotels in the UK.
As you click on the category you want to browse, don’t forget to look “above the fold” to where Featured Offers are shown. The featured offer changes based on which category page you choose; so sometimes the best offer in that category is shown above the menu where you made your selection. You can press the left and right arrows on the side of the Featured Offer box to see other featured offers within that category.

Changing Transaction Descriptions on PowerWallet
Your PowerWallet platform is designed to automatically provide descriptions of your transactions as they enter the system. This way, you are able to recognize that you spent $25 on your debit card at a Chevron gas station or 7-Eleven, instead of just seeing a random store number that means nothing to you. PowerWallet also automatically categorizes your transactions as well. While this works for almost all transactions, PowerWallet also lets you go in a manually change the description yourself, too.
Why change your transaction descriptions?
You can get any number of benefits from changing transaction descriptions, based on what you want to do. Let’s say you have a gas station by your house where you get gas, but you also shop there a few times a week to get incidentals. Since it’s the same gas station, any transactions made here will list the same store name and automatically categorize the transactions as Gas.
However, if you’re trying to keep track of how much you spend on small convenience store purchases, like cigarettes, bottled water or your daily candy fix, listing all these purchases as Gas isn’t going to really tell you what you need to know about your finances. In this case, changing the transaction description and category can help you keep better track of where your money is being spent.
To change a transaction description, click on the Transactions tab of your PowerWallet and then click the transaction line you wish to change. A menu will come up that allows you to change the transaction description and category; you can also assign a sub-category or keyword to help you track your transactions. From the example, you can add “(Candy)” to the description and change the category to “Groceries” to make a distinction on the days where you shopped versus the days where you just purchased gas.
Changing transactions description makes it easier to reference where you spend your money, but it also makes it easier to dispute charges or alert your account provider of fraudulent charges if your card gets stolen. If you’ve ever called an account provider to report a lost or stolen card, they ask you to verify which charges you are claiming as fraudulent. In the past this would be a time-consuming game of trying to match where you’ve been to random store numbers. With enhanced transaction descriptions, you can easily identify which transactions are really yours and which aren’t.
