2015 ABR IL Criterium Championship at Wood Dale. Solo for 40 minutes or so to take the win. I earned it.

Winfield Twilight Criterium
If Wood Dale is the King then Winfield is the Queen. I could race these two every weekend. Love this course, the setting, the neighborhood, the Golf Cart backing up in the middle of the downhill and the ABD & ABR crews.
It’s been like forever since I was in a fast twisty turny fun criterium. PSIMET Omnium back in May to be exact. It showed as I spent part of my first race, 30+, in the grass, on the sidewalk and in the soft shoulder. I managed 9th in the 30+ despite my awesome handling skills.
Then I decided to toe the line for the 3s. Lucky for us we ran with the P/1/2s and it was slated for 90 Minutes. Yeah, that is ONE HOUR and THIRTY MINUTES. Did I mention I raced 45 minutes prior?
Instant PSCS Kenosha 2013 nightmare flashbacks as the whistle blows and Dustin blast off like a rocket ship. I think we lasted 15 minutes with the field.
I made sure to continually tell anyone who would listen that we just needed to settle in, race our bikes, and finish this thing. No 3s would stay with that field. As we raced on we picked up very few guys. We did settled in with some 1/2s and to my surprise I spotted a lot of 3s standing on the sidelines.
Somewhere around the 75 minute mark I was 90% sure BK and I were the CAT 3 leaders racing for the win. Then a Rocket Ship came blasting past us with Captain Dustin leading the charge. We sorta jumped on the back for a ride up the hill. As we neared the top Dustin seemed out of rocket fuel. He was going the wrong way; backwards. It looked like he missed grabbing BK’s wheel so I slotted in front of him. Then he yelled at me, so I rode my bike faster. Then he said nice things to me, so I rode my bike faster. Then I wanted to die, so I rode my bike faster. As we hit the hill it was more effort for me then Dustin finished it off.
I was out of rocket fuel now. BK and Dustin were re engaged and I was going backwards. We were indeed the leaders of the 3s race and BK took the win!
That was really satisfying. Our 1/2 guys were fantastic and all over the race and podium. I got to stand on the podium for the first time in a long time with a teammate and great friend.
Not all races are about strategy, placement, field size, big sprints….
Sometimes you just gotta finish.
