exactly 👑 @powerbottomeminem
@powerbottomeminem literally. idk what’s wrong w/ these people
@powerbottomeminem said: I’m starting to figure out what about the execution in his music I don’t particularly like. His poetry. It’s … bland, a little crude, first draft-ish, no flair nor semblance of "art" (by that meaning not much use of rhetoric devices or creative use of words). Gives me the urge to get my red pen and make it "better" (to what I understand to be better lyrics)
Like, he’s writing in bullet points. These are notes to make some actual word art *from*, not the word art itself. I want my music to be word art in some capacity Though, there’s something to be said for simplicity and straightforwardness. Not sure he hits that for me either 🤷🏻
i definitely think that simplicity is underrated. makes me wanna talk abt old em vs new em but that is a topic for another day!
back to kells lol. when i was a fan i usually appreciated his music more for its themes and moods than for his often basic lyrics. nothing i could write would accurately capture how the outro to “i think i’m okay” w/ kells’ and yungblud’s layered vocals made me feel the first time i listened to it, before i even knew who he was.
but just for the hell of it, here are some examples of lyrics of his that i actually grabbed onto back in the day (as opposed to primarily appreciating the overall sound and feel of a song)
*imminent
@powerbottomeminem SAME. i always headcanon him as someone who likes to cook for other ppl for some reason idek where i got that from
@powerbottomeminem said: I’m an Eminem fan, I have built resistance 💪🏼
before kells and em the most controversial public figure i had been a serious fan of was jack white and that was nothing - NOTHING - in comparison lmao
@powerbottomeminem said: I listened to his stuff to see what all the hoopla is about. my biggest gripe is him slurring his words - it makes the vowels and consonants sound like a dog yawning. I like my singers/rappers to have clear diction since the words are often more important to me than the vibe of the music
i would def say that is more characteristic of his pop punk songs than his rap songs. i think he’s intentionally affecting that lazy/drawling thing to fit his vocals into a particular mold. can’t say i love it either!
@powerbottomeminem said: Also, "hollywood whore" has a very Linkin Park-ish vibe to it which smashes my nostalgia button for endorphins 💚
there’s actually a hidden chester bennington tribute message in the MV for that one and the instrumental is a Numb remix. the nostalgic vibe was very purposeful! he was supposed to go on tour w/ linkin park in 2017 before chester passed, and he performed Papercut w/ mike shinoda at chester’s memorial concert. he also featured on a song on mike’s debut solo album Post Traumatic in 2018 that i still love. i forget how much i know abt kells sometimes lmao i was a Fan
@powerbottomeminem said: I LOVED "hollywood whore" honestly. it’s the only song of his, the rest is okay til meh for me. some have really good ideas but something about the execution doesn’t connect. "habits" and "bad things" are some of those I want to love but it ain’t quite
:O i didnt know you liked any of his shit haha
i think if i were to recommend any of his albums today it would be hotel diablo and general admission
