It’s National Coming Out Day!

Today, October 11, we are celebrating National Coming Out Day, a day to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) identities and to raise awareness of the issues facing these communities.

Coming out can strengthen and deepen relationships and improve self-esteem, but it can also be a risky thing. It can even be dangerous in some situations. The process of coming out is different for everyone.

This day is also a great reminder of the importance of being honest with your health care provider-- being open about your sexuality and identity allows your nurse or doctor to provide the best care possible. The more they know about you, the better they are able to help you stay healthy.

Planned Parenthood's doors are open to everyone — regardless of gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation. We believe that all people deserve high-quality, affordable health care and accurate, nonjudgmental sexual health information, no matter who they are or where they live. We know that when people are truly cared for, they make their lives, their families, and their communities better and healthier.
