With many people spending time with family during the holidays this time of year, abortion rights supporters are craving deep conversations with people they love, and they have committed to engaging in what can be hard talks to help crack through the misinformation and disagreements about abortion.
The best way to support reproductive rights is to talk about reproductive rights!
But, we understand that finding a place to start can be a little tricky, especially with family, so here are some tips!
1. Individual conversations: Talking in small groups "reduc[e] the chance for angry conversations and allows people to ask you questions or frame their ideas with less defensiveness."
2. Have sources of info ready to share: When you are asked questions, having articles and essays at the ready for the other side to read is an effective way to inform them and give them opportunity to view the topic differently. "They are worth keeping and sharing with people who need answers."
Check out Rewire's article above to read about more ways to approach the subject of abortion to your family during the holidays as the strong RJ fighters we are!
Meet Dr. Matthew Zerden, the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood in North Carolina. He’s working to combat anti-abortion laws, including waiting periods, in his home state. “To make a woman that has thought deeply about abortion to wait 72 hours is deeply misogynistic and paternalistic.”
This is his story of care. #WeArePP

Some women have been worried that they will lose insurance coverage for contraception under the Trump administration, but coverage for other women’s health benefits could also be at risk.
At or near the top of the list is guaranteed coverage of maternity services on the individual insurance market. Before the health law, it was unusual for plans purchased by individuals to cover prenatal care and childbirth. But the Affordable Care Act requires that maternity care be included as one of 10 essential health benefits.
In 2009, the year before the health law passed, just 13 percent of individual plans available to a 30-year-old woman living in a state capital offered maternity benefits, according to an analysis by the National Women’s Law Center.
Women Could Pay More Than Men For Health Care Under Trump

An Oregon circuit court has ruled that a resident can change their legal gender to "nonbinary," a gender identity that is neither male nor female.
The World Health Organization is making a change.
“Gay and single [people] who struggle to have kids will now be considered infertile, under an upcoming standard by the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO is expected to announce this new definition for infertility soon, which will be more inclusive for those outside of heterosexual unions or who want to parent without a sexual partner.
This move puts pressure on countries that prohibit gay and single individuals from using fertility treatments or receiving government reimbursement. Nations like France, which only allow heterosexual couples to access in vitro fertilization (IVF), can justify their strict rules by WHO’s current interpretation of infertility.”

The fear of what a Trump presidency could do to reproductive freedom and accessibility is very real.
Many people are searching for a birth control method that can outlast a Trump presidency, like an IUD, since he ran his campaign on attacking access to health care and rights.

Sexual Assault Survivor Draws Powerful Comic About Election Day
In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s win, one woman put her feelings on paper in the form of a gut-wrenching illustration. Created by artist Amy Camber, the short comic illustrates what so many sexual assault survivors experienced during such a tumultuous and triggering campaign season.
Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly. The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”! I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! Lots of love and stay safe! PS: I you repost this cartoon of mine on twitter or instagram, please add me in the post so I can see it, with @itsmaeril :)
This is a great strategy for all types of harassment, please share!!!
I don’t usually call for a Signal Boost, but FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD, SIGNAL BOOST THE HELL OUT OF THIS POST!!!!
plannedparenthood :
Planned Parenthood has been here for 100 years, and one thing is clear: We will never back down and we will never stop fighting to ensure that Planned Parenthood patients have access to the care they need and for the people who come from communities that need our continued support in this new reality.
Many of the people Planned Parenthood health centers serve may be concerned about their safety, and the safety of their families and friends. We will support our immigrant, Muslim, Black and Latinx colleagues, partners and patients in the face of threats made over the last several months.
Health care should not be political. Every morning, Planned Parenthood health center staff across the country wake up and open their doors, as they have this morning, to care for anyone who needs them, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, income, or country of origin. They will do so today, they will do so tomorrow, they will do so every day as they have for 100 years.
Since Donald Trump was elected president, Planned Parenthood health centers have received a deluge of calls from patients and supporters asking if they can still get the health care they need, if Planned Parenthood is staying open — and even if abortion is still legal. Don’t panic.
Planned Parenthood does NOT discriminate. We support everyone regardless of gender identity, race, religion, ability, class, age, or sexual orientation ❤️💛💚💙💜#Repost @ppkeystone
7 Things You Can Do to Help Planned Parenthood and the Communities We Serve
plannedparenthood :
What can you do right now for Planned Parenthood? Try these 7 things.
1. Donate to Planned Parenthood
The work to protect Planned Parenthood patients’ access to care starts now. Your support is more important than ever.
Donate to support Planned Parenthood health centers: Our health centers are open, and they’re continuing to deliver vital reproductive health care — like birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment.
2. Speak Out Against Hate
Planned Parenthood’s patients are from all walks of life. They are immigrants, Muslim, Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ — and they all deserve access to health care in a safe and welcoming place.
Wherever you are (online or IRL), declare your rejection of hate and your solidarity with these communities. Show that you believe every single person is deserving of respect, dignity, and equal rights under the law.
You don’t have to speak out alone. There are several groups supporting solidarity with intersecting communities:
American Civil Liberties Union: Help the ACLU fight unconstitutional policies.
Color of Change: Join the nation’s largest online racial justice organization.
Human Rights Campaign: Help LGBTQ people get treated equally, everywhere.
National Disability Rights Network: Advocate for people with disabilities.
Our100.org: Take a stand with 100 women of color leaders.
ShowingUpForRacialJustice.org: Now is the moment for white people to be bold and join the movement for racial justice.
Southern Poverty Law Center: Make the promises of the Civil Rights Movement a reality for all.
Transgender Law Center: Ensure all can live safe, authentic lives regardless of gender identity or expression.
Trust Black Women: Report anti-abortion activity in the Black community to SisterSong and a Trust Black Women partner.
United We Dream: Fight for relief and fair treatment for all undocumented immigrants.
3. Volunteer for Planned Parenthood
Go to PlannedParenthood.org to sign up to volunteer with Planned Parenthood, or call your local health center.
4. Make an Appointment for Health Care at Planned Parenthood
Our health center doors are open. Like always, every person can get health care at Planned Parenthood, no matter what.
You can support Planned Parenthood by making your next reproductive health care appointment at your local Planned Parenthood health center. Need birth control? A well-woman exam? STD tests? We can help you with that and more. Some Planned Parenthood health centers also provide hormone replacement therapy for trans patients.
Go to PlannedParenthood.org
5. Tweet Your Defiance With #WeWontGoBack
Use social media to reject hate and refuse to let the next president roll back the rights we’ve fought so hard to secure.
Tweet your defiance along with the hashtag #WeWontGoBack.
6. Share Cecile Richard’s Message of Strength
Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards shared a message of resilience earlier this week. Read it here — it’s sure to give you strength.
7. Sign Up for Email & Texts
Join our email network to stay on top of the issues. Our email alerts will also help you learn how to get involved with campaigns that advance and protect reproductive health.
Want text alerts? Text “StandwithPP” to 69866 to join our Planned Parenthood mobile action network. Standard data and text rates may apply. You can text STOP to quit at anytime.
Of course, these are just a few things you can do. The opportunities to get involved and fight back don’t end here. For 100 years, Planned Parenthood has faced challenges and attacks from people opposed to our mission to provide expert sexual and reproductive health care, no matter what. Through every attack, we’ve come out stronger. We’re going to use that strength to lead in the coming days, months, and years — for the patients who rely on us and for our allies across progressive movements.
