THE BROOD (1979) is another gruesome yet smart bit of work from David Cronenberg. This time, while focused on the body, the famed Canadian director-writer tackles how rage, or other negative emotions, can become rooted in the body, physically manifesting itself. Oliver Reed plays a psychologist with questionable methods, whose most important patient is a mother (Samantha Eggar) that's having family difficulties, and he runs afoul of the woman's husband (Art Hindle), after which everything completely falls apart. But it's the weird little kid-like creatures who lurk in the periphery that are the most troublesome, especially once they start to murder. Personally this might be favourite Cronenberg, up there tied with VIDEODROME (1983). THE BROOD explores such personal territory, though it also touches on larger societal issues, as well. Par for the course in a Cronenberg movie. Not to mention there's lots of disgusting physicality to drive home the horror & terror of the movie's themes. - Fun trivia: Samantha Eggar came up with the idea to lick the blood off of the newborn baby. Moreover, the fetuses attached to Eggar's body were actually stuffed condoms. Also, director Joe Dante was responsible for cutting the American trailer for the movie. - "Thirty seconds after you're born you have a past and sixty seconds after that you begin to lie to yourself about it." - #bodyhorror #1979 #70shorror #instahorror #movies #films #DavidCronenberg #TheBrood #OliverReed #SamanthaEggar #Canadianmovie #filmedinCanada #Canuxploitation #horror #horrormovies #creepy #practicaleffectsmakeup #practicalfxmakeup #psychologicalhorror #thriller #Cronenberg #gore (at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador)
