I love Caleb’s backstory like my work is criminal defense and thinking about this shit is so complex because like you can absolutely be the person who did a crime but not be liable because of the circumstances. I think there’s an additional factor of him having already effectively “served time” in the asylum so even if he is “guilty” some consider him absolved because of THAT!!! Like there are so many angles to take and I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like it!!
Oh yeah, the 11 years in the asylum is a huge factor in my own thinking about it, although I don’t know if I’d personally say it absolves him. It’s so complicated! And “liability” in this situation might not line up with certain views of it morally - the immorality is certainly Caleb’s own problem with his actions. The whole thing is a tangled mess. It’s an incredibly layered moral puzzle of a narrative.
