Advent 19: New York Polyphony and Anonymous 4, "Joseph, Lieber Joseph Mein" (Hieronymous Praetorious) More choral music, from a German Renaissance composer with a wonderful name (in iambic tetrameter!). The song has an unexpectedly gentle melody that sounds like something from centuries later--by Haydn, perhaps. I love the small shifts into minor chords, the way the sopranos start arcing over everything at the end when the polyphony kind of ripples out and the whole thing threatens to get out of control, in a Renaissance chorale kind of way.

As It Fell Upon A Holy Eve -- Anthony Holborne, perf. Anthony Rooley & James Tyler

my friends' parents gave me a collection of Elizabethan music when i turned seventeen, and this Holborne suite was right after a shitton of Praetorious.  I really dig this sort of music, but more than anything i wish my name were Praetorious.  can you imagine how bitchin that would be?
