More photos from the second workshop with the women artisans of @i_was_a_sari at the Community Outreach Center in Thane. We printed with traditional block prints and painted finishing touches onto the 🌸flower🌸 prints on secondhand saris made @prattinvenice @scuolagraficavenezia & @prattinstitute - which were underpainted @cope_nyc & @theassemblagenyc !! Also, we are very lucky to have laser cut saris with designs from #prattalumni & dearest friend @alixandrabarrondesigns (who makes beautifulautifuljewelry from recycled bike tires). 💙💙💙💙💙 I was a Sari (IWAS) is a lifestyle clothing and accessories brand that places pre-loved Indian saris at the heart of a unique new style and empowers women artisans from Mumbai to become the designers of their future. The transformation is two-fold, one of the pre-loved saris into unique designs and the other in the lives of women artisans whose lives change for better with income generation opportunities and financial independence. IWAS Editions is our arts programme for incubating creative collaborations with contemporary artists from around the world. In our workshops in Mumbai, pre-loved saris are up-cycled into beautifully crafted pieces that mix the Indian subcontinent’s vivid colour palette with our customers’ love for inspiring, sustainable design. Social practice project, Tarpaulin Tapestries, created by Aubrey Roemer, who is a professional artist and MFA candidate at Pratt Institute in New York, is the first project in our limited edition series. This work was incubated on residency and in immersive workshops at art institutions in New York and Venice. The culmination of these community engagements was brought to Mumbai, where Aubrey worked with women artisans at our community centers to produce large-scale ‘tarps’, intricately layered with ‘flowers’ printed, cut, and sewn from old saris. The works were created for use as beautifully decorated, weatherproof covering for homes in the slums of Mumbai.
