Ability and Reach

Let's just jump right in, hm?

Half vampire hybrids are capable of more than vampires due to their blood magic not being hindered by a stagnant form. Vampires, who only have a stagnant form and can't change, can't make changes to their blood magic and are thusly limited in what they can do with said magic. On the plus side they're magic is consistent and powerful without any training. Halflings are capable of growth and changing over time, and their magic goes through growth spurts with them. Unlike witches who cultivate their magic over many many years, half vampire magical growth has a more sporadic growth rate, which often overwhelms the user.

First a power must be practiced to create consistency, calling the power forward then pushing it down gives the halflings a handle on their power to make sure it doesn't crop up unexpectedly or move beyond their control. At this stage using a power to it's fullest is dangerous and won't help further one's control over it. This is a beginning point that shows what one's ability is in a completely unrefined state.

Once consistency and a mild sense of control are established, the next step is to see where output lies. How much of, or to what extent, can one use their ability? Finding this out will give an idea of how much refinement is necessary to make the power a truly useful resource, rather than a destructive uncontrollable thing that isn't helpful in tough situations.

Following this step is finding one's reach, how far can an ability be used? Not just how much it can be used but at what distance can it still be applied effectively. Finding one's reach gives an idea of limitations to help a hybrid know how capable an ability is in certain circumstances.

After these three things are established, the next step is vague refinement, to give a shape or form to a power. Vague refinement is a way of finding what feels right for said halfling and how they use their power. Whether they choose to use their power in a far reaching or close quarters way is up to them, and once one is established they can attempt to try the other. Strength is a requirement in either case, as powers such as these can be quite 'heavy' or hard to use long term without physical strength to help support them.

Then comes proper refinement, which is used to turn a simple style of using one's power into a true art that only they can know. Only after the half vampire has the strength required to use their power and has a firm grip on what their power feels like can this final step occur, to make their power theirs and know it well enough to use it with ease and prowess.

This is a very scary reality for vampire society, they don't know if halflings are trustworthy with such great powers at their disposal, feeling the same way about them as they do Dorian, or if these kids hold grudges against Elysia at large. Elysia has trouble accepting Vlad, who has shown restraint and has in no way acted on destructive impulses the way the Pravus was expected to. Vlad, who is the son of a vampire who did many great things for Elysia, and ultimately kept not only D'Ablo but also his father from getting their hands on his power and using it for their own gain. Vlad to them, either can't be trusted because he's too young to truly be or act as the Pravus, or can't be trusted because he is the Pravus and has caused the deaths of several well respected vampires and thrown Elysia into chaos by disrupting their power structure, probably to help himself and pursue his own power.

So yeah, Vlad and Co. are all in hot pursuit of their powers fully refined in case Elysia comes after them.
