I understand devotional activities now! + realize ritual is important to me
long title but incredibly relevant.
From the start of my research into and practice with Hellenic Polytheism, I didn’t understand devotional acts. I can’t explain why but I hadn’t done any explicitly, until now, because I didn’t know how to “do it”, or what to even do...
But last night, I gave an offering and prayed (more about that later) and devoted my eating healthier to Apollo and Demeter. And today... well, I certainly ate a lot healthier for starters. More importantly, every time I ate something off my healthy list (fruits/veggies because I normally eat ZERO), I felt connected to Apollo and Demeter. I went out of my way to make sure I ate those things because I was doing it for them. And every time I did, I was celebrating them and celebrating myself by eating healthy. It was awesome, in the real sense of the word.
I also devoted a few other things to other Gods, so we’ll see how those go as well, but they weren’t as important for this discussion.
Now, realizing ritual is important to me. I hadn’t been offering/praying as often. (As an aside, I need a single word to describe this activity.) I made sure to do it yesterday and even scheduled it in my bullet journal, which I’m also trying to get back into using... The past few times, I hadn’t had much ritual to it. Pour libations, pray.... So last night, I sticked to the rituals I enjoyed at the start of my practice.
I completely acknowledge that using khernips isn’t actually necessary. I believe it’s not. But for myself, ritual practice is important. It definitely unlocks a different part of my mind, focuses me to where I need to be to pray. I light bay leaves to make my khernips - the smell immediately pulls me to a worshiping mindset since I have only smelled that when praying.
Beyond doing khernips and cleansing myself, I gave more structure to my way of praying. (Thanks to @sisterofiris for their assistance with this) This also helped significantly. I actually went out of my way and wrote down how I did it last night, in the hopes that I can repeat this again in the future. it was probably the most rewarding prayer I’ve had in a month or more, and I needed that.
TL;DR: I figured out how to do devotional activities and why they’re valuable. I found that ritual works better for me than making it up as I go, and it made praying more valuable. Big thanks to @sisterofiris for their help.
