pictures to remember this space once i rearrange it and make it anew
Alter space coming along beautifully✨
the war room
i need a prayer space. i'm talking flickering candles, a well-worn bible, a journal, gel pens and some soft music playing. i want to wear a veil and spend time in contemplative prayer. i want a place that FEELS like the presence of the Lord when i enter it. i want a place where i can quietly be with my Savior.
Setting Up a Home Altar or Prayer Space
Taking time for spiritual pursuits when so many things are crying for our attention can be quite a challenge. Maybe you're aware of a drip in the faucet, a crack in the wall, or an uneven step. It could be that it's time to prepare a meal, clean the dishes, or do the laundry. Perhaps you've been happily interrupted by a text, call, email, or other message from someone you dearly love. I know I have been distracted by a dog who wants to go into the study, out of the study, into the study, or who throws a rubber pineapple at my feet begging for a treat.
Whatever it is, carving out time can be hard. One way we can help refocus our attention is by creating space that has the purpose of prayer, worship, and spending quality time with God. Any time I go on retreat, one of my first tasks after carrying my bag inside is to find a surface, a spot, a corner to designate as the place of encounter in my quarters.
This practice in no way binds God to that one location, but rather, it creates a visual encouragement in my space to pursue my connection with God. Home altars or prayer spaces can be places to put a variety of items that help draw our attention to the divine. Making space helps me to also make time.
In the pictured space above, there's a candle (electric for safety in my cabin), a smooth wood hand cross that I can hold and enjoy the sensation of the weight in my hand, prayer beads to encourage meditative prayer, a journal for poetry with a pen, two books I was reading for learning and inspiration, a couple devotional readers, and my daily office prayer book.
In a home space, I would also include more permanent items, like wall crosses, icons, or other art. I keep a Bible on hand for daily readings. I might also have colorful decorations to capture the current season of the year, and even seasonal decorations like Nativities, Easter items, and more.
As we move into the shorter, darker days in the northern hemisphere and begin to spend more time indoors, I hope that you take some time to make space for prayer and worship in the place you call home. You might be amazed how having the space moves your soul in such a way that you also find you have the time. Beloved, let us pray.
How to Create the Perfect Alter Space Before you create your space What is an Alter? and what is the purpose of it? is it voodu?
I got a new book and I love it already - it's got so many ideas and is already giving me ideas for how to use it with the youth and also for prayer spaces!
