Remember when Jesus told his followers to pray in the closet? Was it because (as I was taught) it would create a more personal relationship with the patriarchal god? Or was it because if prayers were made outdoors, people would believe the trees and rivers and rocks would hear and might be inclined to grant the request? Tikva Frymer-Kensky discussed the tendency of the people to cling to nature worship, and how difficult it was for the religious leadership to stamp that out. What if this was just one more injunction designed to turn people away from their belief in immanence and move them toward transcendence?

Prayer Closets & Walls

This is a huge thing in the Deep Bible Belt. Are you familiar with them? Personally, I don't have one, but I have been having some strong convictions lately about having a quiet, peaceful place to pray and meditate on whatever is in front of me at the moment.

Visitation in my prayer closet

One early morning.

I knew the Spirit was stirring

I was worshipping and adoring.

Giving Him love and admiration

Something was definitely forming.

Low and behold

There He was, in all of His glory.

My prayer closet transforming

It became a glory filled sanctuary.

I was blinded by His light

I've never seen anything that bright.

I was mesmerized

Just in awe.

He said, please stop worrying

I will catch you if you fall.

I love your faith in me

It brings me such joy

When you confidently stand tall.

Reminding the others

That I'm still in control of it all.

That’s what a family did to survive a deadly tornado which tore through parts of Alabama in 2019 after their entire house was destroyed in the storm, but nothing happened to them because they took shelter in their grandmother’s prayer closet.

It was the only part of the house which was not demolished.
