I drew Katie pre-embrace in college with her ex-boyfriend around late 1982 to remind myself that even before she had that freak accident and was turned into a vampire she still very much wasn’t as good of a person as she thought she was. Her relationship with her boyfriend was rocky and toxic. He lost his bottom-of-the-food-chain yuppie Wall Street job in late 1986 and began to mooch off of Katie. And as a new grad nurse in the 1980s, she already was in significant debt and was basically broke, so having her boyfriend use up her money for substances and his desperation to pay off his own debt made her spiral. They fought for months, and she ended up cheating on him with her own coworker. In December 1986 or January, she finally packed up his things while he was out, threw everything out of her apartment, and cut his face out of some of her photos. Despite this, she still felt the need to have him around, and they continued to date throughout early 1987 (she was STILL cheating on him too and having relations with her coworker??? very complicated) even though he really did treat her terribly.

When she was turned into a vampire by her affair in March 1987, her boyfriend was her first kill. Her sire abandoned her, and she very irrationally believed for MONTHS that she was cursed by God or something out there because of her infidelity, rather than it happening by the hands of another vampire.

She can’t bring herself to the conclusion that she is indeed violent. A monster with a thirst for bloodshed who needs to survive. Katie tries everything to hold onto her humanity, rather than accept whatever it is that she has become. Even when she has to feed and there are other vampires around, she tells them to look away because she’s ashamed of herself.
