Day 10
On Thursday I spent most of the morning checking, printing and submitting my PDP work for the deadline on Friday, I completed it and then showed Steve some of the images I took before. He said that he liked them and I believe that I now have six strong images for my final outcome that I am happy with. We then had Nico's lesson in which she said I did a very good job. The lesson involved splitting up into pairs (the two photography people, me and sam had to go with film people) so I was paired with Reece. One was then the script writer and the other was the cinematographer. I was the cinematographer, and we had to write a short script with some but very little dialogue, including two characters and three locations. It was hard to think of an idea at first and Reece wanted to do comedy but I found this difficult and we ended up deciding on a horror. I had the idea of a classic american style horror with a couple being the victims of a murderer. Reece wrote the script while I made a word document trying to describe it as best as I could including detail, lighting and camera angles. Here is what I wrote:
3 locations – America, LA - Bedroom, Bathroom, Street 2 characters – John 29, Emily 27 horror
Bedroom – Black screen while the sound of the door being broken into plays. Double bed in the center of the bedroom positioned next to the door, which fills a lot of the room. A bedside table either side of the bed, with a lamp switched off on both sides. A tv remote placed on the left table and a book and glass of water on the right. A window on the right side with a street lamp outside dimly highlighting the room.
Medium close up of the headboard above John, so he sits up into shot as he hesitantly stares at the door.
Cuts to a wide angle as he pulls back a thick white duvet. Emily rolls over in her sleep facing away from John to face the window, now lighting her face. John steps out of bed, wearing just black jersey shorts (suggests a hot evening in America) and walks slowly to the door. Opens the door and walks out into a black corridor turning right and leaving the door open.
Emily rolls over once again, this time taking note of his absence and sits up in bed. She pauses for a minute, before getting up, walking around the bed pass the camera to the door.
Camera cuts to a medium shot of a long corridor with a small window at the end. Slightly allows in some light, highlighting the walls, allowing the shape of a framed picture hung on each wall facing each other to be made out.
Emily enters from an open doorway on the left, steps out into the corridor and turns right to face the camera. The camera tracks backwards as she walks slowly towards the camera and into the bathroom straight ahead (door open). It is still dark with a dim light from the window, until Emily pulls the switch hanging to her left turning on a small round light in the center of the room. The bathroom is painted a dark grey with white tiles and furniture, black towels are hanging on a silver towel rack next to the light switch with the white open door on the left.
The camera cuts to a medium close up behind Emily. The toilet can be slightly made out to the left of her, a sink directly opposite, with a black, shiny toothbrush holder containing two toothbrushes (suggests no children) and a small window above it that has Cotswold glass. Emily filling most of the shot.
Camera tracks from behind as she walks forward, pulls back the door to view the bathtub. John is lying in the bathtub on a pulled down white, opaque shower curtain, his head facing towards the wall and his left leg hanging on the edge of the bathtub. His eyes are open with blood pouring from his head, on his face, in the bath and on the shower curtain.
While tracking Emily all that can be seen is his left leg, as she shrieks and begins to hysterically cry. This is as far as I got but I was quite happy with it and I'm glad Nico said that I did a good job. Reece did finish the script but trying to picture the scenes and describe them took some time so I didn't complete it all. It was fun though and after I got going I really enjoyed it.
We then had tutor with Alan who gave us improvements on our CVs and cover letters/emails, and I resubmitted them.
