#preachlovenothate This was one of my favorite days in Sierra Leone. It was the end of Ramadan and we spent the entire day before cooking a huge feast. My host family was Christian, yet they all took the day off work to cook for their Muslim neighbors. I was asked to experience the holiday with my friend's Muslim family who were celebrating the end of their fasting for Ramadan. Aly and I wore traditional dress to be respectful and headed to the mosque with over half the neighborhood. I always respected Sierra Leone for being one of the most tolerant countries I've ever lived in. It was full of both a large population of Muslims and another large population of Christians. But, Muslims took off work for Christmas to help celebrate and Christians took off work for Ramadan to help celebrate. It was a beautiful, reciprocal, loving society. #travel #noban #nowall (at Bo, Sierra Leone)
Day three of #preachlovenothate...My guy friends in Iraq all bought motorcycles and would often let me ride on the back. We'd speed through the breath-taking Zagros Mountains a little too fast and feel totally, incredibly at peace. I'd plug in some Kid Cudi, hold on tight, and let the day envelop me. Being novice, self-taught motorcycle riders, accidents were bound to happen. I remember riding into the small mountain town of Ranya, easing up our breakneck speed, when my friend Spencer caught a bump and crashed his bike. The cars behind us immediately stopped, dusted him off, and insisted he sit down. Within minutes, a dozen or so local Kurdish men had started working to repair his bike, had offered him a Coca-Cola, had repeatedly asked us if we were all right, and then shoved us into a car because they were adamant that they needed to buy us lunch. One of the men proceeded to buy each of us an entire pizza and drinks, refusing any money we offered him. Then, he took us back to the bike, loaded it into his friends truck, and drove us all over town, looking for a repairman. That kind of kindness, the Muslim hospitality, is something we should strive to emulate. It should not be something we fear or turn away. #noban #nowall
