it has been a minute since I’ve posted again! My senior preceptorship starts next week & I’ll be on *Labor and Delivery!* I am so excited and nervous at the same time!

Neurology

I had a preceptorship with a neurologist, and it was awesome! We saw four patients in three hours, and it didn't feel rushed at all. The neurologist also did a lot of procedures on these patients, from outpatient nerve blocks to the EMG setup he had right in his office.

One patient in particular had a strange numbness in one of his feet, and through a complete history and a full hour of EMG testing, we figured out that it was a very strange presentation of sciatic nerve compression, which was so interesting.

The one big takeaway for me was that when you he did the myotome portion of his neuro exam, he pushed with all his might until he actually overcame the patient's strength (impressive especially when your patient is a lot bigger than you are). He said that because many doctors shy away from doing this, slight weaknesses and asymmetry can go unnoticed, meaning a worse prognosis when they finally present to a neurologist.

I really like neuro because a lot of it is like a puzzle. All the symptoms are coming from one place and you have to figure out where. Now especially with all the procedures I saw available to outpatient neurologists, it's definitely on my list.

life lately

hey waddup it’s ya girl a fully licensed driver!!!!!!!

passed my test with flying colours on friday!!!! beforehand my apple watch alerted me that my heart rate was over 120bpm while i was at rest..... yup I was a lil nervous hahaha 😅

SIX shifts left of preceptorship. can you believe??? (jvn voice) but truly. i move home, for good, to the same house as my love, in thirteen sleeps. three months ago i was stressed out of my mind and had no idea where i would end up and here i am

i emailed work today and gave them a start date for a couple shifts a week, and they’re pumped I'm coming back, so that’s great 

basically that’s all. hospital, school, sleep. being so, so excited to begin a forever life and routine. 

oh, and i broke out the christmas movie usb, sooooooo...🎅🏻🎄❄️

Preceptorship Assignment

Hey, guys and gals! Sorry for the radio silence this semester, it was crazy. But I am three finals away from the end of the semester. After this finals I will have one semester left until graduation. Which means *drum roll* preceptorship! I just got my assignment and I am so happy with it! I got Labor and Delivery!!! I have been hoping for that this assignment for forever!!! So looking forward to next semester, but also dreading it because it’s the last semester of nursing school. Eek!!! Wish me luck!

Today I did a cardiology preceptorship and it was probably one of the best I've done so far. The doctor started out by telling me I could ask the patients anything I wanted, not to worry about slowing him down, and to make sure I really hear each heart and lung sound before leaving the patient. This allowed me to learn so. Much. More. I heard loud murmurs and faint murmurs and heard lung pathology and made a pit in pitting edema and watched an echo and it was amazing!! I left invigorated and rejuvenated and just so happy that I'm going to be a doctor someday. The doctor even gave me these calipers to practice interpreting some real EKGs as a parting gift. But his real parting gift was inviting me to follow up and see one of the patients I met today be cardioverted on Monday... he even said he'd let me push the button 😜

I had a preceptorship in the Operating Room today. I was kind of nervous going into it since I’ve gotten an aura of passing out just watching someone get stitches before. But honestly that’s kind of why I set this preceptorship, to see how my body would react and how I should prepare for my surgical rotations next year. I walked into the first surgery of the day at 7am: a rectal polyp removal. It was actually a good introduction to surgery because there wasn’t a huge gaping wound in the patients skin, just a small visualization of the mucus membrane and a little bit of blood. Then I watched a very quick temporal artery biopsy, which was interesting because the operation was right next to the patients eye. Lastly, I watched a laparoscopic hernia repair (which the nurses showing me around said might be boring) and it was really the coolest surgery of the day. The view that the camera had was absolutely awe inspiring. You could see every artery and every bit of anatomy, and the surgeon had such great control over the equipment. And after a huge patch of mesh was inserted, all the patient had was a few incision marks and a couple sutures. Absolutely amazing. And this entire day was with a badass all female surgical team! These ladies were moving huge patients with ease and they knew each other so well, it was so cool to see in the male dominated surgical world. I still don’t know if I’d wanna be a surgeon, but my mind is definitely much more open to the possibility than it used to be. It would be so sweet to correct people who think I’m a nurse “um actually I’m a surgeon”… but tbd if that would at all be worth the surgical lifestyle.

life lately

just booked my final driving test and am freaking ouuuuuttttttt. I am a million times more confident driving now since I have my own car but need to relearn how to parallel park and just ....park....in general.....not miles away from the other cars......... 🙃🙃

also cost me $90 so that sucks but that’s life 

preceptorship is going well! 240 hours to go. and I move home for good in LESS THAN 40 DAYS. howwwwww

I have been such a lil slug and doing nothing but chilling and school work and note taking and watching all of the haunting of hill house and the first half a dozen episodes of the good place

my bestie is visiting next week!!! she got a preceptorship back home so it will be nice to have company since I literally just go to preceptorship and do school work

mostly just trying to not let my anxiety swallow me and just do the damn things

how come writing an essay outline is so much harder than writing a damn essay??? (and why do profs make the outline an assignment??????)
