A bitter laugh escaped the teen’s throat. “Believe me, you are not as dangerous as I am. Or, I was.” he intoned, nervously brushing his hair across the nape of his neck to hide the tattoo that held his identification number courtesy of HYDRA. Thankfully, he’d grown it long enough that it covered the mark with room to spare. Sometimes he could still see the red stains on his hands, no matter how many times he washed them.

Tastes Like Hate

James watched the tiny redhead - Natasha, lord knew he’d written it on enough cups of coffee - as she sipped her morning cup.  Black, as usual.  For some reasons, although fuck if he could figure out what that reason was.  She seemed to hate coffee.  Based on her expressions, it was right up there with things like toxic waste.

“You know,” he said, leaning his elbow on the counter.  Elbow, singular.  He’d not bothered with the prosthesis today.  The whole staff were vets, so he was far from the only one with scars.  Anybody who came into Reveille should be able to guess from the name alone what they were getting themselves into.  “I wouldn’t normally say this, but I’ve watched you make faces at your coffee every morning for at least a month now.  You are allowed to get flavoring, or at least some cream and sugar.  Drinking it black doesn’t make it any more caffeinated and it doesn’t make you look any older.”

Natasha paused, cup halfway to her mouth. And then she blinked owlishly at the man in front of her, trying to process the fact that the noises he was making were actually words and not gibberish. Then again, it was English. The entire language was gibberish. Coffee, she decided, needed to come first before her whole multilingual brain decided to wake the fuck up. So she downed a good portion of the cup and forced her brain to actually function. 

“Flavoring is for losers. And adding cream and sugar is a form of weakness. I’m aware that it doesn’t make the coffee any stronger, but being kicked in the face by the taste of liquid assholes certainly wakes me up enough to pretend to be a functioning member of society until the caffeine kicks in.”

Leaf: What’s your favourite season?

Beth has always been partial to Autumn. The days are warm and the ocean has some great waves, the sun gleams in blue skies, but there’s almost always a hint of rain on the horizon. The nights are cool enough for a fire and a warm blanket and a cup of cocoa without being frigid to the point of discomfort. The turning leaves set the world on fire, but there’s still the abundance of life in the ripened harvest. It’s a contradiction, a paradox, that to her, symbolizes life.Plus... Flannel stolen out of someone else’s drawer and super-soft fuzzy socks. Seriously.(Her least favourite is Spring and it’s tl;dr as to why).

“Well,” he muses, pale blue eyes thoughtful. “I suppose it’s because I’ve lived through great tragedy. I’ve been down here long enough to know that you’ve got to see the joy in the hard times because there is never a moment that is truly free from the spectre of Death.”

Sipping the whiskey in his delicate china tea cup, he adds, “Or perhaps it’s because I’ve simply lived long enough to be amused at my own misfortunes and annoyances.”
