OC Questions

I've been answering some OC questions on Bluesky, and thought I'd share them here on tumblr, as I haven't updated on the story in a while. It's still going! 4 chapters in.

Q1. Tell us 2 facts about your OC that makes them your favourite.

A. Chose the protagonist, Junar:

I constructed him as an 'emo teenager' but made him Neanderthal. So it's fun to explore what kinds of decisions he would make, living in this prehistoric world, and being an angsty teen.

He's also an older sibling and with a lot of responsibilities. I think a lot of people can relate to him in that regard.

Q2. If your OC had to choose between;- -Saving their loved one but doom the world. -Killing their loved one but saving the world. What will be their choice?

A. I suppose the answer to this would be to save his loved one but doom the world. He doesn't really know it though, and realizes the consequences of his choice after seeing the damage he made. But he wouldn't go the other route either. He loves his sister too much ;-; It's one of the things that make him increasingly angsty after the mid-point.

Q3. Who do your OCs live with? Talk about the group they are with! (If no group, talk about their living environment.)

A. Time to talk about my imaginary Neanderthal family: Junar is part of a family of 19. All siblings and cousins and second-cousins. It's been both exhausting and fun making their family tree 😆 I don't have many pictures saved of my art of the other characters, so I'll just share this simple sketch that I have.

Well, pretty much all of them are only actively present in the story within the first three chapters, most of them don't even have speaking lines 🫣 I need to prioritize the characters who move the story forward. But they all still need to be there. Their existence is important.

I'll share a blurred image of the kinship diagram I made. Includes up to 4 generations, which is where we have the single eldest family member. Generally speaking, most people in the family are rather young. In the beginning of the story, Junar and his cousins are around 10 years old. Parents in their late 20s at this point. That makes the eldest generation in their 50s-60s.

Q4. Does your OC have siblings?

A. Absolutely yes! Their relationship is the core of the story. Junar has one surviving sister, Jaya. There are two deceased siblings between them. This created an age gap, but they are still very close. ❤️ They have a strong bond.

Q5. Has your OC attended any funeral?

A. The first scene is a funeral o-o

Q6. Any animals/monsters in your world? Show them off or talk about them.

A. Maaannny animals. I'm gonna zero-in on the monsters.

The main 'monsters' are jinn. They are like actual jinn and fairies. They don't have a physical form by default, but can create one by consuming souls. Their form depends on what species they ate. The more they eat, the stronger they are.

So, If jinn ate human + wolf souls = werewolf :) (Kind of making a single origin story of the multiple hybrid creatures that exist in real-world mythology and folklore. What combination do you think could create a vampire? Or griffin? Minotaur? wink wink).

If it ate a single species, it will look exactly like it.

And if it ate a bit of every creature… That's gonna be truly monstrous. But at that point it would be so powerful it can choose to shapeshift into any form it wants.

The antagonist is a jinn. I don't want to spoil too much, but I'll share this: He ate a goat or two, so his ghost-like appearance takes after them (I couldn't resist the reference lol). Still too weak to be physically touchable at this point in the image below.

Q7. What's one aspect of the world of your OC that you personally enjoy?

The fact that it's a world that humans have spent the most time in throughout all our existence on earth (prehistory). It is a foreign world, yet very accessible at the same time. You just need to spend a day out in the wild to get a taste for it (with no modern technology, of course).

I also really like reading about world mythology, and have incorporated some of them into the story (eg. jinn, fairies, and yokai come from different cultures yet are very similar. They are capricious, shape-shifting spirits that have free will and thus can be good or bad or something in between.) I combined all of them into one species as explained in the question above.

So basically, my OC's world is really just me exploring our own world and putting my "oooh what if.." moments into a single story. It's a bit fantastical in that regard, but it's still our world too so I enjoy that about it 😁

Skirmish with a Skinwing

This predatory giant "skinwing" is harassing a human hunting party out on the open savanna. The skinwing is of course inspired by giant pterosaurs such as Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx.
