Today marks the 46th anniversary of my idol Steve Prefontaine’s death. Pre was basically Nike’s first athlete when that company was small and getting off the ground. He didn’t win all his races, but boy did he win his fair share in dazzling fashion. Matter of fact, he came up short on the big stage, that being the 1972 Munich Olympics, but Pre ran with heart and guts, even if it meant crashing and burning at the end. His most famous quote might very well be “To not give your best is to sacrifice the gift.” but here’s one that sticks with me most “A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways as they're capable of understanding.” or “Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it.” Today I thought about Pre while I was out with four great runners. I crashed and burned at the end, but I haven’t been that pleased in quite some time because my legs gave me all they could and then some, and I didn’t totally embarrass myself like I thought I would going in. Something said hey compete today and see what happens. Thanks @mailman_mcgee @__jude__mc @whysoserioussir and @jrjohnso2 for letting the ole boy stretch out with you like old times.
