Live Artist Presentation 2 Final Installation
Experimenting with dipping white roses in paint and soaking them in ink so that they would turn black, and decayed looking from the inside
Playing with a purely abstract emotional response to the picture to the crystalised photo of the bunch of flowers.
I also experimented with masking fluid, which is the yellow drips. I was going to paint over the top, and then pull the mashing fluid off, but Robin advised me not to.
I’d like to push this concept further and paint in abstract reaction to the female body. which I think I can see shapes of in this painting.
Logical Response to the crystalised flowers. This was me painting in the layers from the most simple image to the most complex image.
What I found interesting, that I didn't anticipate is that I would have to make decisions about which shapes to leave out, in order for the background shapes to show through. Granted, I was rushing this painting over a week and used very thick paint, but I would like to try this again over a few months and do really light, transparent layers to see if I can get a similar yet different effect. I would also like to have pushed this a bit further, but Robin told me to leave it, so maybe I’ll have to try it again.
I have already put down the base layer on another canvas for this process to happen but I think it will have to wait until the holidays.
Trying to incorporate my design knowledge into my practice, without thinking it's holding me back for being over analytical, I took a photo of a bunch of flowers that I've had saved in my ‘to paint’ file on my computer for a few years now, and used some photoshop filters to crystalise the photo down. I spent about 2 hours and came up with about 50 different variations. But these were my favourite in the progression of reduction. I am going to use these to respond to for Presentation 2 for the live artist project.

What is Queer Theory?
Merriam Webster definition: an approach to literary and cultural study that rejects traditional categories of gender and sexuality.
Sex isn’t as simple as restroom signs suggest
Along with queer theory, sex and gender are never completely aligned. There always seems to be a strange discrepancy there. And it’s never simple. Queer theory just wants to state that anything normal can be destabilized. Not everything is as simple as it seems.
It spawned in the 1970’s when feminism believed that talking about sex among girls is normal and it can be fun. There are no restrictions on the topics that women can have simply because they are women. There was also a belief that along with sex, comes its own essential characteristics. Women are supposed to be thoughtful and calm while boys can be a lot more aggressive and passionate.
However, feminists during this time were also not happy with the thinking that men and women have essential traits that are followed. This ignores the wide spectrum of everything else sexually.
Categorizations only limit!
It is believed that many that when it comes to bodies, they are essentially either male or female. But then what about transgender people and people that are born inter-sex? There are so many stipulations that are becoming more normal because more people are talking about them that it becomes harder to put people in boxes. We all have characteristics that are against the gender mainstream that society has created.
Why should we care?
When we all talk about what’s normal or not normal then we all become the same in a way because we are talking about the different ways that we are different and how we defy stereotypes. So thanks to queer theory, Belle (from beauty and the beast) is allowed to choose who she wants to marry. Talking about it also eliminates the idea that certain professions act a certain way. I would love more nontraditional teachers for example, because it would add variety and be more interesting.

Questions:
1. What examples have you seen in your everyday lives when it comes to women behaving ‘abnormally” and getting shamed for it?
2. what differences have you seen between women and men when it comes to shaming? Do you think men shame just as much, but maybe in other areas?
