These documents belonged to Army Private First Class Wataru Nakamura, a Japanese American soldier who fought with the acclaimed 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II.

Nakamura enlisted in the Army from Camp Rohwer, a Japanese internment camp in Arkansas. Nakamura fought with distinction in #WWII, and later paid the ultimate sacrifice for his heroism in Korea. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his bravery.

Nakamura’s military personnel record is among those that were damaged and salvaged after the 1973 fire in St. Louis. After the dirt and debris from the fire were cleaned from these documents, technicians placed these pages in protective polyester sleeves.

The first National Historic Park

America survived here! Every year in May, historical organizations celebrate Preservation Month to promote historic places and draw attention to how they benefit their communities.

The Morristown National Historic Park was the site of General Washington's 1779 winter encampment where the Continental Army survived one of the coldest winters on record to continue their fight against British forces. Ford Mansion and nearby Jockey Hollow were preserved as America's first National Historic Park thanks to the efforts of the Washington Association and local preservationists.

A museum and research archive exist at Ford's Mansion where Washington and his officers headquartered, and the Hollow regularly hosts reenactments of the troops who persevered there. Both are popular heritage tourism destinations that contribute to Morris County's economy.

#PreservationMonth flew by. Thanks once more to @clevelandrestoration for encouraging us to appreciate the diversity of architecture in our neighborhoods while social distancing. We finished out the month in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland looking for examples of the Second Empire style which is characterized by: 1. Mansard Roof 2. Patterned shingles on the roof 3. Decorative brackets in the cornice and ornate window and door surrounds 4. Single story front porch 5. We’ve had a great month appreciating the wealth of beautiful architecture in Cleveland’s neighborhoods throughout #PreservationMonth Thanks again to the Cleveland Restoration Society for inspiring us to explore and appreciate the diversity of architectural styles. Rounding out the month, we found some nice examples of the Craftsman Style in Cleveland’s Ohio City Neighborhood featuring: 1. A mid to low pitch roof that has wide overhanging eaves, and a series of decorative exposed beams along the edge 2. Triangular brackets along the edge of the roof. 3. A full or partial width porch supported by square tapered columns 4. Three or more windows grouped together in a line 5. We’re rounding out Preservation Month with Cleveland Restoration Society’s scavenger hunt. This time, we hit the streets on Cleveland’s East Side in Shaker Heights in search of some Tudor Revival Style characteristics including: 1. Multiple steeply pitched gables 2. Stucco and half-timbering 3. Leaded glass windows with a diamond pattern 4. Front door with a curved Tudor arch 5. We hit the streets again in the Ohio City neighborhood on Cleveland’s West side in search of houses exhibiting Gothic Revival characteristics: 1. Steeply pitched roof 2. Decorated bargeboard in the front gable 3. Front facing gable 4. Vertical board and batten siding 5. Gothic style pointed arches and windows 6. Decorative crowns over windows and doors 7.
