Featured Artists: John T. Biggers,  Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Joan Gaither Ed.D, Jacob Lawrence, Amy Sherald, Derrick Adams, Arvay Adams, Emory Douglas and Makeba Rainey. . In celebration of the “Year of Frederick Douglass,” The Douglass Reading Room, features books written by and about Frederick Douglass and other influential African American authors.  There will also be art works by noted artists. Guest curated by Greg Morton of Baltimore, this interactive exhibit brings to life the writings and living quarters of Frederick Douglass connecting historical themes with modern day discussions.  The exhibit opens on June 5, 2018 and runs until February 28, 2019. Research Archivists Emily Huebner and Allison Seyler were thrilled to be a part of Preservation Maryland Summer School in Frederick this year! 

We discussed best practices and tips for using social media as outreach at a historic site, institution, or small museum. Along with Meagan Baco of Preservation Maryland, Auni Gelles of the Civil War Heritage Area, Amelia Grabowski of the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Museum, and Jake Wynn National Museum of Civil War Medicine we encouraged the audience to become participants and Tweet, Facebook, or Instagram during our talk!

Other sessions featured telling stories with maps (using Esri and Story Maps), making small towns cool again (human investment drives community success), and the post-lunch talk by Heather Arnold focused on Streetsense - a multidisciplinary design and strategy firm specializing in retail, restaurant, hospitality, and real estate solutions - and how they have revitalized downtowns and Main Streets across the country. Overall, it was a fascinating day, full of learning!
