Trump threatens China with 50 percent tariffs

US President Donald Trump has threatened China with tariffs of 50 percent if it supplies weapons to Iran. "I'm hearing reports about China providing shoulder-fired missiles, so-called shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles," he said.

The trigger may be a CNN report that Beijing intended to supply MANPADS to Iran. "I doubt they would do that because I have a relationship with them, and I don't think they would do that," Trump said in an interview on Fox News.

"But if we catch them doing it, they will be hit with a 50 percent tariff, which is a staggering amount."

Previously, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, had demanded on CNN that Trump take a more aggressive stance against China for supporting Iran. Trump's announcement of additional US sanctions on the Strait of Hormuz was also aimed at countries whose ships were previously allowed to pass through—China being one of them; after all, Iran is one of that country's main oil suppliers.

However, such tariffs would likely not only trigger retaliatory measures from China, as already demonstrated with rare earth metals; they would also significantly worsen the inflation surge in the US. In March, inflation there rose by 0.9 percent compared to the previous month.
