BIOGRAPHY.
** TW ILLNESS, DEATH **
Family always came first for Preston. A momma’s boy. That’s how Preston was always described. Preston was always a shy young boy, often hiding behind his mother’s legs when she introduced him. It wasn’t as if he had anyone else besides her and his sister, but to him, Millie was an absolute hero.
He hated leaving her when it came to school, no matter how quickly time flew by. He always made every single picture dedicated to her in art class. It wasn’t until they had to do a project on the most important males in their lives that Preston figured out something, or rather someone was missing. The kids at the table asked him, confused why he didn’t have a dad. He was confused too, he didn’t even know something was missing from what seemed to be a picture perfect life to him. He had a mom and a sister, who he loved very much. He didn’t think he needed a dad until those select kids began to question why he didn’t have one and with the questioning, they told him what they did with their dads. For the first time in his life, Preston felt like he was missing out.
This curiosity sparked something in Preston. He began to ask more questions in class in general, as he began to pretty much question everything. He’d ask why the sky had to be blue or why they even had to learn in the first place. Occasionally he’d ask his teacher why everyone didn’t have daddies and his teacher would always have to point out that they had to stay on track.
As he got older, Preston began to understand more. He understood that he just simply didn’t have a dad nor a father figure. That he couldn’t go and play ball with his dad, or eventually have his dad teach him how to shave. He loved Millie, though, he admired her and everything that she did. She just could not fix the empty hole inside of his heart.
The emptiness that he felt turned into resentment. Preston turned into a teen that was angry. He had a chip on his shoulder, but he was able to sizzle this fire by joining the football team his freshman year. With that, came the perks of being popular and while he shouldn’t have enjoyed those perks, he sure did. He went out to senior parties with the football guys and everything seemed to finally be looking up. He was almost content with life.
When Robert came into his life, he felt some sort of attachment to him, like he could somehow relate to the man. A close friend of their mother’s, a friend close enough in which he would be considered their uncle. Preston looked up to Robert and for the first time in his life, he had a father figure. He felt as if his life was now falling into place between getting to find his place in the popular crowd and now having someone else he was able to look up to.
Apparently, all good things don’t last. Robert was sick and was going to die. More importantly, his father was going to die. Robert told the truth about who he was to his sister and him: about how he was their father. He could feel everything slipping away. He didn’t care that Robert lied to them, he didn’t care about the pain that he had caused Preston by not sticking around. He cared about the present and the future and how he was going to lose his father just as he was getting to know him.
Preston changed when Robert passed away. He had tried to not let it affect him, but it had. Preston was subconsciously hurting his friends, losing those important ties with them. It was affecting his schoolwork, and how he acted around others. Losing Robert was the last straw for him, feeling as if he was being whipped by with his father. He quit football his senior year, and was often seen sitting by himself at lunch, not wanting to be bothered by people.
He was angry and had no idea how to express his anger. He’d lash out at teachers, at friends who would try to make him pull his head out of his butt, and even visited where Robert was buried to lash out at him. He was a hopeless case, a young man with his whole life ahead of him, feeling as if his world already ended.
He had to get out of Toronto, hell he had to get out of Canada, staying there was painful for him. Preston’s University applications were to all colleges in the States, so that he could get away. Suffolk University in Boston seemed to be perfect fit for him.
Preston has tried to start anew, he has tried to not push people away from him if they were trying to get to know him. Though every time he comes home, he can’t help but retract into his old ways. He visits less and less often, and while he knows it breaks Millie’s heart, he just needs to space himself from that place as much as he can. He’s ready to make something of himself and make Millie proud and while he hates to admit it, Robert too.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH? HOW DOES IT COME IN HANDY?
It’d probably be the fact that I have a pretty good sense of direction. I usually only have to visit some place once to know how to get to it again and how to get back. It comes in handy when I’m trying not to uber my ass everywhere and save some money.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESS? HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIFE?
Uh, well people kind of scare me. I never know what their intentions are, but I’m trying to work on that. I’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I’m sure most people are good. I just have a hard time seeing that. I just have a tendency to be really closed off, that’s how it affects it.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS?
Hopefully successful. I want to be a reporter, and not just because I think it’d be pretty cool. I just want to make my mom proud. She’s sacrificed so much, it’s time for me to take care of her.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO KING’S TERRACE?
Living on campus was more expensive and King’s Terrace seemed nice enough and new enough for a good substitute. It’s in a good location, and I really like my place.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’d tell him that it’s going to be okay. That there are gonna be some ups and downs, but that’s life. I’d tell him that he has to not become weary of people and that how he’s going to have to come to terms with the fact that life just isn’t perfect.
You're better than people make it out to be A. and you always will be.
Thanks Preston, I know I've been hard on you but that's only because you're dating my best friend and I can't have you break her heart and hurt her. So this definitely means a lot coming from you. You're a good guy Preston. xoxo -A.
do you remember me? I know we met briefly in Paris a few years ago. How've you been?
I do remember you vaguely. We met at a café right? I was working on the fashion there and I ran into your family with your dad doing his artwork. I've been well! I love my job and my friends. We have to catchup soon! Hopefully I'll see you tonight at Butter.
