...Does anyone else wonder if Wendolene lost her father when she was rather young?
I think I've always assumed she lost him as an adult, considering she says he left her the shop, his debts and 'a few other things' (Preston). Plus, in his photo, he has white tuffs of hair, hinting he was perhaps getting on a bit before his passing.
But I was just thinking about it today and...
While I think I do see in media adult female characters still calling their dads 'daddy' on occasions, I usually only see this in American media. I'm not saying it's not a thing here in the UK, but I'm pretty sure most us Brits switch to just Dad at a certain point and stick to that (although, this might be a bit more of a nowadays thing and might have been different in 1995 - I was only born then so I don't actually know 😂).
But a young child or even a teenager perhaps might still call her father by that moniker...and I think if a father dies when one is rather young, that moniker might stick even when said girl has all grown up.
Which could make the dynamic between Wendolene and Preston more heartbreaking. Perhaps in his cyborg mind, he can only see her as the little girl his father created him to protect, not even able to compute the concept of aging and Wendolene being an adult, able to look after herself. And perhaps Wendolene, losing her father so young and perhaps even raised alongside Preston the majority of her life, ends up struggling even more to accept when Preston starts declining into evil - because he's the only true link to her father she has left.
Also maybe that's why she claims Preston is 'just like he used to be' (when he's essentially been robo-lobotomised). If she was remembering before her father's death and was rather young at the time, maybe all she saw was Preston as this bright, smiley, waggy-tail robot and not as anything else.
