I think it could’ve been alternate reality with a temporary wormhole (mentioned in “The Lich”). Also yeah, I agree on Finn’s dreams and aspirations.

Finn essentially visited a pillow version of Narnia, grew up and had a family, and when he found his way back to Ooo, barely any time had passed at all. A good theory and a good reference indeed.
