So I’m pretty sure that Jonah’s prayer in Jonah 2 and Psalm 107 are tied together in some way. I think one is alluding to the other... depending on the dating. The result is that Jonah is describing his descent into the depth as a descent into a temple of death. When he says that he descends to the “roots of the mountains” and that “the earth and it’s bars” are around him. He is using temple language. The word for “roots” there is a word that is only used 2 other times in the OT. 1 Kings 6 and 1 Kings 7. Both times it is in reference to the tabernacle. The word for “bars” is a bit more common but it also is most often used to describe the tabernacle, the temple, or city gates.
So Jonah is basically saying that he was descending into a temple of death that was a counterfeit of the temple of the Lord, and yet the Lord snatches him out of this temple of death and raises him back, resurrecting him, as it were. This gets added support from Psalm 107 because the same word for bars is used there to describe the Lord destroying the bonds of his people’s distress when he “brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death.” Jonah 2 and Psalm 107 are both in reference to the Lord destroying a counterfeit temple of darkness.
